Taylor Ruden joins Ngโs staff at UVA after serving as assistant coach at Ohio State the past four seasons from 2020-24. Ruden helped the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Championship in 2022 and four NCAA championship appearances, including a top-10 finishes in 2021 and 2022. She coached the Buckeyesโ Second Varsity Eight to gold at the 2023 Big Ten Championships and eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
โI am thrilled to be joining Wes and the womenโs rowing staff at UVA,โ Ruden said. โThe successful history of this program and the people that have been created along the way is something I canโt wait to be a part of.โ
โTaylor Rudenโs addition to our coaching staff is a game-changer,โ Ng said. โShe has an amazing rowing and coaching pedigree and has been instrumental in creating individual boat and team improvements at the NCAAs. Taylor understands the comprehensive nature of what it takes to succeed and brings an educatorโs mindset to her coaching. Taylorโs ability to inspire and develop student-athletes as a whole person, combined with her strategic programmatic insights, will play a crucial role in driving UVA to our ultimate ambition. ๐ถ๐ท

Josie Konopka (Philadelphia, PA) joins the UVA staff for the 2024-25 campaign. โIโm thrilled to join the UVA coaching staff and to work with a team with such an incredible legacy in NCAA womenโs rowing,โ Konopka said. โI am grateful for the opportunity to continue to coach with Wes and to become a part of the University of Virginia community.
Konopka was a two-year captain of the womenโs rowing team and earned first-team All-America honors from the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) and first-team All-Ivy two times. She helped lead the Quakers to their first full-team NCAA Championship appearance in 2022, when Penn finished 11th, and then was in the two-seat in 2023 as the Quakersโ Varsity Eight won silver at the Ivy League Championship and followed that up with a fourth-place finish at NCAAs. Overall, Penn took sixth as a team at the 2023 NCAA Championship.
โI am incredibly excited to have Josie Konopka join our staff as an assistant coach,โ Ng said. โI knew she would be the first person I wanted to build our staff around. Josieโs journey from a scholastic recruit to U23 National Team athlete to First Team All-American and two-time team captain at Penn is meteoric. It is one that every collegiate athlete aims for. Her deep understanding of the sport and her ability to teach and inspire from her firsthand experience will be invaluable to our program. Josieโs family legacy in rowing and her natural leadership skills make her a perfect fit for our program.โ

Helen Samaniego โ10 returns to as an NCAA Championship athlete and NCAA Championship coach. A six-time US National Team rower on the senior, U23, and junior levels as well as a Senior Worlds silver medalist in 2013.
โThe stars aligned for me to work for Wes at Virginia,โ Samaniego said. โWes has shown remarkable compassion and leadership to me at Penn and as my coach at the 2013 World Championships. Working for Wes combined with coaching for my alma mater is a dream come true.โ
โSomething is fantastic about this homecoming for Helen, UVA Class of 2010 and NCAA champion,โ Ng said. โHelen and I had a chance to work together at the 2013 World Rowing Championships and the University of Pennsylvania in 2023. I greatly respect her approach to rowing, her excellent track record of success, and her deep passion for this sport. Precious few coaches have won the NCAAs as an athlete (2010) and as an assistant coach (2024). As a world-class sculler and lifelong learner in the sport, Iโm excited for Helen to help lead our small boat skill development and help future Hoos experience the same success and journey she did. Simply put, Helen knows what it takes to win!โ ๐ธโ๏ธ๐น โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ
