Our new educators are READY to be changemakers!π₯ We had an AMAZING time at the ACPS New Teacher Academy signing up educators and racked up over 43 new members in ONE DAY! A new one day record for us! π₯

Congratulations to one of our elementary schools and its hard-working AEA Rep for being the first ACPS school to achieve having 100% of its Classified Staff sign collective bargaining cards! Employees are excited for bargaining!

Happening right now is the first Albemarle County School Board meeting of the New Year. Along with the new year come new board members and a new opportunity for the School Board to finally do right by its school staff and Get. Collective. Bargaining. Done.
We are sharing with you the letter we shared with the School Board about the status of negotiations and our hopes for a productive process going forward. Let's have 2024 be the year we improve teacher retention, value our support staff more fairly, and recognize the labor rights of our employees - let's move FORWARD toward collective bargaining.

- Introduction of the recommended calendar by the calendar committee and discussion: "After careful review, the committee does not recommend an early start for next school year and will not pursue a two-year calendar adoption. The committee has recommended a calendar option for the 2024-2025 school year (attached) and will like the School Board to advise on their willingness to move to an earlier start date in the 2025-2026 school year."

Tune in to the school board meeting tonight (public meeting begins at 6:30) to hear who the new Rio District School Board member will be! This member will be appointed by the board to fill the vacancy created when Callsen left.
Other agenda items of note:
- Annual report of the Special Education Advisory Committee - these members (families, community members, teachers) have been working hard to push the Division to DO BETTER when it comes to our students with disabilities.
- More discussion and action on the proposed 7+1 schedule for high schools.

We know things have been quiet around collective bargaining, but that doesn't mean we aren't working hard in meetings with the School Board to get our staff the strong, fair resolution they deserve.
C-Ville Weekly recently covered our ongoing talks with the School Board, which were only re-started after our courageous staff spoke out about the importance of fair bargaining before the School Board.
