I didn't sleep much last night. I'm not sure why. Maybe I was afraid that I wouldn't hear my alarm this morning and the kids would be late to their first day of school. Maybe my brain was too busy doing cartwheels. (Because 1am is always the best time for mental cartwheels).

I've already doubled my coffee, but I'm dragging. I've got Taylor Swift radio blasting, swept and mopped the kitchen floor, and run up and down the stairs about 10 times trying to get my blood pumping. Who has a tried and true, I'm sleepy but I can't get back in bed solution? Share your secrets with me!

The ONE thing I won't be doing as a newborn photographer.

Photographing a baby under 7 days old. Listen. I know there are photographers who love a 3-5 day old baby, but it's not my jam. I find that they are trying to establish a nursing routine and it's just so much harder on baby and mom. The absolute last thing I ever want to do is stress a new mom out with a fussy baby because it's hungry. So no, I won't be doing that.

How old was your newborn when you had it photographed? I'm wondering if it was a trend to photograph younger babies in years past and now we're trending toward photographing them a little older.

My kids have been out of school for a week now and I'm already feeling the feral summer vibes. They love every crazy, chaotic, non-structured moment. I grew up with my mom working full time so we were kinda free ranging kids over the summer as well. She got home from work at 3:30 every day so we just had to not die before then. Of course we called her a million times a day with complaints that someone wasn't letting us watch the show we wanted, or we didn't know what to eat for lunch, and probably drove her nuts every day, but those are good memories. I kind of want those for my kids as well.

I'm just gonna leave one of my favorite pictures of the twins being summer feral and you let me know what your kids are doing this summer.

I don't have any pictures of me pregnant with Noah.

That statement stings. But it's not entirely true. I do have some pictures of me at a baby shower my Bible study friends through for me. I'm sitting in a chair, wearing a pink maternity sweater, and I look...well....terrible. I hate looking at them because I remember the chaos that was going on in our lives and how miserable I felt. I WISH I had something else. I WISH that someone would have told me that I would regret those being my only images from his pregnancy.

That regret is the driving force behind me asking any client who books a newborn session if they've had a maternity session. If they say no, I simply ask why not. I listen and gently suggest that they might regret it in the future based on my own experience. Often times they agree and decide to come in for a few portraits before the baby arrives.

Whether you decide to do a full out maternity session with an album, wall portraits, and the whole 9 or you want to do a single portrait, I believe it's something you won't regret. The difference in a memory of feeling gorgeous in your maternity portrait versus feeling like a sad sack of potatoes will absolutely color your view of your pregnancy. You're growing a perfect, tiny human and that's deserves to be celebrated!

I was honored to be part of a gallery show of black and white children's portraits this month. When each artist came in, they had us sign our pieces and it was a bit of a wild experience for me. I have some videos, maybe I'll post them. It feels weirdly like bragging to me and that's why I haven't.

I enjoyed these so much that I've decided to add it as a permanent line here at the studio called Simply Littles. The personalities that came out during these sessions was hilarious. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time and I can't wait for all the artwork to go home. The kids all beamed from ear to ear when they saw their portraits and are stoked to see them in their rooms.

"Mom! Show us pictures from when we were little!" Samuel shouted as he plopped onto my bed.

It's become the twins' favorite thing to do before bed. They want to grab their newborn album or flip through images from their toddler years and listen to the stories about what they were doing when each image was taken. I love the joy that it brings them. I got teary eyed the other night telling stories and Olivia was like, "mom, why are you sad?" I told her that I wasn't sad, but rather it was filling my heart up reliving those moments and the love I had for them was overwhelming me.

And that's when it hit me. Documenting the earliest days of your baby's life is not only a gift to your child, but it's a gift to yourself! A gift that allows you to relive the wonder and immense joy of this incredible time every time you walk passed the portrait or crack open the album.

She was a geriatric newborn.

What in the world is a geriatric newborn you may ask? It's a 6+ week old baby. 😂

You see, the size of your newborn is going to dramatically change from week 1 to week 6. And while I can still get a variety of poses, the potato is going to be bigger, they will be more awake, and they will have an opinion about what we do.

That's why the ideal time to have your newborn session is when baby is 10-21 days old. They are still squishy, bendable, and generally don't care if I'm bothering them.

Liv was in baby sheep heaven. Do I even tell her she gets to do a session with a mini horse this weekend? She's going to be out of control.

Archie was the sweetest little lamb with all the kids who came to cuddle him. We really couldn't have asked for more and I hope he enjoyed his spa day and bottle while at the studio.

Some times magic happens when you bring a lamb and a newborn together.

What’s better than a swaddled baby? How about a swaddled puppy!

This little rag muffin loves to be wrapped up in blankets even at 4 months old. She didn’t make a single peep.

She’ll be available with any day now.

She slept like a perfect little angel.
