** Information Release **
On Friday, March 1, 2024, at approximately 4:32 pm, officers with the Albemarle County Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash with no injuries off Interstate 64 on Rockfish Gap Turnpike.
Due to the crash, the westbound left lane of Rockfish Gap Turnpike was closed. ACPD patrol vehicles were stationary in the closed westbound lane with their emergency lights activated while a vehicle involved in the crash was being removed from the roadway by a wrecker.
At approximately 6:03 pm, a Chrysler minivan traveling off exit 107 on I-64 struck the rear of an officer's patrol vehicle that was parked with its emergency equipment activated. The impact from the crash caused the officer's vehicle to strike the rear of the vehicle being towed, which in turn struck the wrecker. The crash caused significant damage to all vehicles involved.
The officer was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision and was uninjured in the crash. The 63-year-old male driver from Culpeper, Va., was also uninjured and was charged with reckless driving (§46.2-852).
While no one was injured in this incident, ACPD would like to take this opportunity to remind the community of Virginia's "Move Over" Law. When approaching a stationary vehicle displaying flashing red, blue, or amber lights or that has activated its hazard warning lights, Virginia law requires that the driver of any motor vehicle move over by making a lane change not adjacent to the stationary vehicle. If changing lanes is unreasonable or unsafe, proceed with caution and maintain a safe speed.
Traffic-related incidents are a leading cause of death for law enforcement officers, and we encourage everyone to take a simple step toward safety—move over when you see flashing lights on the roadside.
Last night the Foundation and Albemarle County Police Department honored the heroes who saved 17 lives in the County over the last year. We also recognized 11 Department promotions ranging from Sergeant to Lieutenant Colonel. Thank you to The Catering Outfit and One Creative Cookie for making the celebration extra special.
Thank you to Elanco and Charlottesville Veterinary Hospital for teaming up to keep Albemarle County Police Department’s four legged officers healthy! We appreciate you! 🖤💙

Please join the Foundation in celebrating Richard Hewitt. For over 10 years, Richard Hewitt has been a loyal supporter of the Albemarle County Police Department. He served as a member and the chair of the Albemarle County Police Department’s Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC). Mr. Hewitt also has been instrumental in the development of the Public Safety Operations Center, a state-of-the-art facility that houses the County’s fire rescue, and police operations. Through this partnership, the Albemarle County Police Department is able to enhance the way it provides services to our community. Lastly, Richard has been a long time supporter of the Foundation. As Richard steps down from his role on the CAC, please join me in thanking Richard for his unwavering and steadfast support of the Department, Foundation, officers and community! Thank you, Richard.
Please join me in honoring Mark Wood, the 2023 Community Relations Award winner.
This external award recognizes any community member or local business that has made exceptional contributions to improve community relations with the Albemarle County Police Department. This year's recipient, Mark, owner of the Putt Putt Fun Center, has contributed to strong police-community relations over a long period. For years, Mark has donated his venue and staff for the Foundation's "Putt Putt with Police" event, the largest annual Department community engagement event. Over the last 6 years, Mark Wood and his family have generously donated their Fun Center and their employees’ time, creating the opportunity for police officers to engage with thousands of members of our community.
We are so grateful for the continued partnership from this year’s Community Relations Award winner! Congratulations, Mark.
Please join the Foundation in celebrating Officer Brian Jones, the 2023 winner of the L.F. Wood Community Service Award.
Officer Jones is a leader in building community relationships. When crime increased in a local neighborhood, Officer Jones partnered with his colleagues, members of the business community and the Foundation to establish regular events at the apartment complex with the goal of building trust and ongoing relationships. While Officer Jones was initially faced with reluctance, his persistence has succeeded in the creation of trusting partnerships and a reduction of crime in the area. Congratulations, Officer Jones and thank you for all you do to keep Albemarle County safe.
Please join the Foundation in celebrating Jason Scarlata, the winner of the 2023 Professionalism Award.
Jason embodies professionalism, selfless service and the values of the Albemarle County Police Department. Not only did Jason work several complex, major crime scenes for evidence but he also prepared the entire Unit for audit all while learning the role of the property room manager after the sudden departure of his predecessor. Jason puts others' needs ahead of his own and is always willing to help accomplish the mission of the agency. Congratulations, Jason, we are grateful for your service!
