DITCH THE STRETCH -PART 2
Confessions of an Anti-Stretcher π
So.. if you haven't read Part One ..
please check it out below on page,
then come back to this.
It will make a lot more sense.
I think the most common thing that people say to me when I first meet them is this:
"Why am I still hurting and tight, even though I'm doing everything right?"
This always includes: stretching.
They are frustrated, suffering with all kinds of different issues like-
- toss, and turn at night and can't sleep
- hurt after exercise not during
- can't wear certain shoes
- feel like their eyeball is going to pop out of their head at computer
- feel stress in their neck and shoulders
- feel off-kilter and dizzy when trucks pass by driving
- can't stand for long periods
- can't drive around town without their ass lighting on fire π₯
- ETC ETC ETC
Do you relate to any of these? I have so many more examples but I don't want to
write too many words.. I know you are busy.
So what's the deal? π€¨
First of all .... I want you to know - IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT
You are following the current narrative and it just doesn't work.
How do I know this?
Because I've spent the last 30+ years helping people get out of pain,
and I've learned a few things along the way. To date I've done over 70,000 treatments
because frankly I was obsessed on figuring out a better way. Not just for others but
to help myself. ππ»ππ»
I got into my profession because I was in a lot of pain from past injuries
I had got from being a gymnast, π€ΈββοΈcheerleader, and a few car crashes/crunches
- 17 to be exact. (yes, I counted them all up one day for an inventory of sorts).
So what's with the whole stretching thing... ??
To clarify when I speak of stretching I don't mean just
reaching up to the sky and squiggling your arms back and forth,
or flowing through a yoga routine,
yoking your breath and body together with movement and focus,
or moving the parts of your body to warm up for your morning run.
I mean stretching with the intention of really pushing, pulling your limb,
head or foot.. farther than it wants to go, and telling yourself if you just
push a little bit harder, soon you'll be all loose again.
When I type those words, all these images come to my mind of past clients,
who even though what they were doing was NOT WORKING were adamant
that their way was the right way because that group of people called "THEY"
told them they had to stretch to get better.
I remember Lilly Anne (not real name to protect identity)
She came in with severe Sciatica pain. She had it for a long while and had
seen many people to try to help her but it was getting worse.
My therapists and I gave her a couple of treatments and she was amazed that
the sharp nerve pain was getting less and less, and she actually slept better.
The third visit she said "Oh it's back! My Sciatica disease is back!"
So first question out of my mouth was "did you stretch, roll, or press anything into your ass?"π«
She responded "Yes! I used the gun right here (pointing to the area where the nerve comes out), and
I stretched like this .. pulled her leg over to the side, then plastered her shin bone on her nose β¦
I yelled "what part of DON'T STRETCH, PRESS OR ROLL ANYTHING INTO YOUR ASS DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?"
I think that included a @ #$ #% #$% word in there because I was pretty frustrated. π
She yelled back "You are an Anti-Stretcher! You are going against the WAY!
We laughed, and then she looked at me perplexed.
She said "I just can't get it through my head that there could be another way because "everyone" says
that stretching is the only way to make the body more flexible, looser and out of pain,"
I looked her in the eye and said "so, how's that been working out for you?"
Stay tuned for Part 3...
Let me know in the comments below if you relate somehow to my post here..
β οΈππ»PS β¦ Hey ! For all my happy daily stretchers out there .. just scroll on by .. and keep stretching..
This is not for you. I'm trying to connect with the ones who are not feeling awesome,
even though they are really trying to follow the current narrative which is:
if you just stretched more youβd feel ease and comfort again in your body, and live happily ever after.
DITCH THE STRETCH - PART 1
Confessions of an Anti-Stretcher.... π
Are you hurting and tight,
even though you are doing everything right?
Like.. daily stretching ! π₯²
What's the deal?
Isn't stretching supposed to make you
more flexible, limber and pain-free?
Isn't this what "they" (the experts)
say.. over and over again?
Ok so here comes my confession.. π
Ever since I can remember I believed if
people just stretched more they would become stretchier.
When I was growing up I was a gymnast.
I was born Uber Flexy so I'd just wake up and jump into the splits..
literally jump up in the air and into the splits.. no problem. π€ΈββοΈ
Well, some girls on my gymnastics team were not so bendy.
We were told if they just stretched really hard they would become like me.
We would sit, stand and push them into position - No pain, no gain. π
They would inevitably get strain, sprain and tears..
thought they were just unlucky. (I'm sorry if I stretched you too hard) ππ»
Then later in life I became a massage therapist.
I was then professionally trained to stretch people.
I remember lugging my table up the foothills in Boulder, Colorado,
so I could stretch all the elite runners .. however, they never got more flexible ..
but they did have their share of injuries - Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis,
Sever's disease, and hamstring tears.
i thought they are just not stretching enough... π
One day .. years later, I had an AHA moment... ππ»ππ»π
I had been a massage therapist for decades,
was older and wiser ..
I got into the discipline of tracking results of clients and it was clear -
NO ONE got more flexible from hard stretching but continued to feel
stiff, tight and just not alright.
It got me to thinking .. π€
I thought maybe when we stretch past what that unique body
believes to be the "stretch limit"
the millions of receptors that reside in
every muscle, tendon and ligament who act like the security guards..
and communicate to the brain - HEY !! DANGER!β οΈ
I'm getting stretched past what I feel is
my natural stretchiness limit..
and the brain said I'll help you!
So the brain triggers the chemical reaction that
makes the muscles tight again to protect from further stretching..
The body is so amazing at keeping us safe!
ππππ»
Hmmm .. so what is one to do .. if they don't stretch??
I'll share that in Part Two - Stay Tuned!
Hey! Let me know in the comments below
what are your thoughts/experiencing on stretching! πΊπ»πΊπ»πΊπ»

Has your kid ever been given
a "Sever's Sentence?"
It is the worst.
It's not just awful for the child suffering, but also for the parent who has to watch them hurt and sit out on the sidelines.
The other day I had a little ten year old boy who had been suffering with foot/heel pain since he was six! He told me that he couldn't play sports, and it hurt just to just walk down the stairs.
After the 3rd treatment, he looked up at me, right into my eyes, and said.. "thank you so much for helping me." Then he told his mom later.. "I think Julia and Stephanie just changed my life."
I haven't been able to stop thinking about him. It made me wonder.. how many kids are out there are suffering for no reason, when we have been helping them for many years.
A client prompted me to do a Facebook Live event and share what we know. If that sounds like something that you'd be interested in please give me Yes, Let me know please.. below in the comments or PM me and I'll add you to the invite list. π
