On this day in U.S. Army SF history.......09 June 1965: US Army First Lieutenant Charles Quincy Williams would receive the Medal of Honor for actions he performed on this date at D**g Xoai Vietnam.
Williams joined the U.S. Army from Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in 1953. After serving as an NCO and paratrooper in a heavy weapons Company, he later attended Officer Candidate School, and by June 9, 1965, was serving as a Second Lieutenant with the 5th Special Forces Group.
On that day, in D**g Xoai, the Republic of Vietnam, the Special Forces camp where Williams was the executive officer of a Special Forces "A" Team, was attacked by a Vietcong regiment. As the battle raged through the night and into the next day, Williams was in command of the camp, which consisted of two compounds after the Special Forces commander was badly wounded. He coordinated the defense and, eventually, the evacuation of the wounded from the camp, which included besides the Special Forces compound, the district headquarters compound. He was wounded four separate times during the fourteen-hour siege on the camp. He was subsequently promoted to First Lieutenant and, on July 5, 1966, he was presented the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle.
Navy CM3 Marvin Glenn Shields (December 30, 1939 – June 10, 1965), who assisted Williams during the attack, also received the MoH (posthumous) and was the first and only United States Navy Seabee to be awarded the Medal of Honor. He was also the first sailor to receive the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty in the Vietnam War.

For all of our submariners out there. Did you known this story. Adapt and overcome!
The submarine USS R-14 ran out of usable fuel and lost radio communications while searching for a missing ship in 1921.
As seen in the photo the crew stitched together blankets, hammocks and battery deck covers, and then spent 5 days under sail to travel 120 miles back to Hawaii. The CO received a letter of commendation for the crew’s innovative actions from his Submarine Division Commander, CDR Chester Nimitz.
