The scraping sound of wheels rolling back and forth under our station wagon came from outside 7048 Benson Ave. I opened the front door to see my dad underneath the car, his feet sticking out.
“Hand me that three-quarter-inch socket, boy.”
I had a purpose. I felt useful. Yet, it was hard for me to read my father. He didn’t use words of comfort, give many hugs, or say what was in his heart.
I knew very little about the man I idolized and loved and wanted to be around all the time.
In those days, my father spent long hours on the USS Chicago, a guided missile cruiser that had done several stints in the Vietnam War. He’d been home only a few days after spending about six months away.
Now he was in our driveway, and I stood there, wanting more than what he gave—orders to clean up the mess as he backed out of the driveway.
The car was fixed, but I felt broken.

Eighty-five-year-old Ishar Das Arora is among the last generation of people to have witnessed India’s independence from British rule in 1947. He was only seven years old at the time. However, this freedom came with the ravages of partition, as the Indian subcontinent split into Hindu-majority India and the newly created Muslim-majority state of Pakistan.
“I grew up listening to the stories of my grandfather wanting to go back to his old home, his school in Ziarat, [the] temple and mosque in the village, and the desire to meet his childhood friends,” says Sparsh Ahuja, Arora’s grandson.
Moved by the longing in his grandfather’s voice, Ahuja, who was at Oxford University studying philosophy and economics, got talking with his Pakistani friend and fellow Oxford student, Ameena Malak, in 2018. They discovered a shared connection: both of their grandfathers longed to revisit the ancestral homes partition had forced them to leave behind.
However, obtaining a visa to travel between the two nations remains challenging for citizens of either country due to the political tensions, even under the best circumstances. Considering the challenges, the duo created Project Dastaan, which means story in Urdu.
The project aims to heal old wounds by using virtual reality (VR) and other technologies to reconnect partition survivors like Arora with their childhood homes. Volunteers in India and Pakistan use 360-degree cameras to locate and film these places. It allows them to create a customized VR experience with the help of VR glasses, bringing these locations to life for the displaced.

For the better part of the last century, a defining feature of the United States has been its overwhelming military might. However, maintaining unrivaled military power necessitates spending an unrivaled amount on defense, and the US defense budget has increasingly reflected this reality. Even more, with costly, behind schedule acquisition plans and modernization efforts spiraling out of control, this spending has arguably become less effective over time at ensuring US security.
The Reimagining US Grand Strategy program’s July 2024 roundtable brought experts together to discuss the state of US defense budgeting and acquisitions. Members of the group discussed the various structural problems enabling this spiral, such as the highly opaque requirements process, increasing Department of Defense (DOD) reliance on a small number of contractors, and lackluster enforcement of limitations by Congress. Aside from structural inadequacies in the budgeting and acquisitions process, others in the group highlighted a critical underlying cause of this increased spending: overly expansive strategic aims that do not match ends with means.

Erin Spencer, a homeless Marine Corps veteran, says he has “lost count” of the number of times in the last 10 years that he has been arrested or forced to move from the streets where he sleeps in the San Francisco Bay Area.
And each time, he also lost something personal during the sweeps in one of America’s most progressive regions: the tools and materials he collected to make his artwork.

Last week, we published a story on officers excessive uses of force at 2020 protests in the . These are some of the officers mentioned in the reporting, many of whom remain at CPD and could be on the ground during this week’s DNC actions.
Our reporting looks critically at CPD’s supervisory structure. Under the ongoing consent decree, police Sergeants are charged with ensuring that officers comply with department policies - like not striking protestors in the head with a baton. However, we found that when Sergeants did not ensure compliance, like Sergeant Rubald who walked away while Officer Bankus was beating a protestor, they were rarely disciplined or discipline was challenged by then Superintendent David Brown.

Thirty years after my jet-flying days, I suddenly landed hard inside the concrete walls of San Quentin State Prison. Twenty-six years to life for murder. A terrible crime with horrible ripple effects. Something I will never be able to fully amend.
Looking up, I saw the fleeting contrails of my former life, wisping away in the sapphire sky. Gone were my three-dimensional life choices. Only one choice seemed to remain: to be or not to be?
