Today we are honoring Dr. Alexa Irene Canady. Dr. Canady almost dropped out of college as an undergraduate, but after recovering her self-confidence she went on to qualify as the first African American woman neurosurgeon in the United States. Alexa Canady earned a B.S. degree in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1971, and graduated from the medical school there in 1975.

Dr. Canady was chief of neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital of Michigan from 1987 until her retirement in June 2001. She holds two honorary degrees: a doctorate of humane letters from the University of Detroit-Mercy, awarded in 1997, and a doctor of science degree from the University of Southern Connecticut, awarded in 1999. She received the Children's Hospital of Michigan's Teacher of the Year award in 1984, and was inducted into the Michigan Woman's Hall of Fame in 1989. In 1993, she received the American Medical Women's Association President's Award and in 1994 the Distinguished Service Award from Wayne State University Medical School. In 2002, the Detroit News named Dr. Canady Michiganer of the Year.

Today we are honoring Patricia Bath and all the work she’s done for health care.

Patricia Bath was the first African American to complete a residency in ophthalmology and the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent. She invented the Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment in 1986.

In 1993, Bath retired from her position at the UCLA Medical Center and became an honorary member of its medical staff. That same year, she was named a "Howard University Pioneer in Academic Medicine."

Among her many roles in the medical field, Bath was a strong advocate of telemedicine, which uses technology to provide medical services in remote areas.

Thank you for everyone’s support this year! It’s been an up and down year, but with the support of everyone we have been able to help lower A1C’s this year. We have been able to help women gain control over their diabetes so they can prevent life threatening complications like limb amputations.

Because of your support we will continue to do this year after year. We couldn’t do it without YOU!

Thank you to everyone for donating yesterday as well!

Coaching Session — The Suga Project Foundation 10/08/2020

Happy Thursday!

Our founder, Natalie, is giving YOU or anyone you know, a gift in celebration of her birthday October 9th! She is offering FREE transformational 30-minute one-on-one diabetes coaching sessions to the next 20 people who click the link and schedule a time with her.

Who couldn’t use a little hand holding on their diabetes journey? The holidays are upon us and they present their own challenges when it comes to food and stress. Often we may not want to admit it but managing diabetes is HARD and often confusing and having someone “hold your hand” may be just the nudge you need to feel more at ease, less guilty, and find peace of mind. A session with Natalie will do this for you!

For those who don’t know Natalie, she is an Integrative Medicine Health Coach from Duke University, a healthcare researcher and a PhD student in health psychology. She founded The Suga Project Foundation to help people escape diabetes complications and to advocate for health equity and reduce health disparities regarding type 2 diabetes. To “add insult to injury”, COVID-19 has impacted people with diabetes worse than any other epidemic in history. The best defense against diabetes complications is keeping diabetes under control, so she is offering free coaching sessions to help anyone who’s up for it!

Don’t wait, click the link below and select your time to meet with her.

Hi Everyone! Connecting back to our last post about starting new habits, we wanted to give you a little bit more to think about. The following is an exert from the PatientsLikeMe website and forum and it is super helpful to understand WHY changing habits are so hard and HOW to change them in spite of.

Maybe you’ve tried to form an exercise habit or eat differently to meet health goals discussed with your doctor. The goals mean a lot to you – they're important. You want to do them. But somehow, you struggle to get in your groove. You feel discouraged about how difficult it is and might table the goal for another time...and then you start this cycle again.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. Almost everyone struggles to incorporate new things to their routines because of the science behind habits. Many of your actions during the day are not decisions that you make in your life, but a series of habits that you’ve formed. Some examples of this are how you brush your teeth, shower, do the dishes, drive, or walk to the grocery store. These daily tasks are essentially on autopilot in your brain. You don’t need to think as hard to figure out how to do them. This allows you to put your attention to other things that require more critical thinking.

A deeper dive into how a habit forms can help us figure out how to change our old habits and incorporate new ones that you can stick with! Here are the parts of the habit cycle:
- Cue/trigger - Habits all start with something that reminds the brain of said habit. It could be a time of day, a place, a person, a feeling and many other things. Everyone has unique cues for their habits.
- Routine – Once the trigger has been registered by the brain, the routine will unfold. For example, at certain times of day, you might be more prone to snacking or checking your phone for messages. Certain feelings might trigger being more creative or the need to relax by the TV.
- Reward – The last phase of the habit cycle is feeling good because you went through the cycle. Something about the routine should make you feel happy and fulfilled. This reinforcement motivates you to remember the trigger and repeat the routine to get back to this point of the cycle.

With the better understanding of the science of habits, we can change what surrounds the routine to reinforce it:
¥ Create new cues - you need to have a good reminder to start a new habit. If you want to go for walks, perhaps laying out workout clothes ahead of time will remind you to get moving. If it’s a hobby, is there something that you can do to remind yourself of it during the day? Technology enables us to create calendar reminders, which can be very helpful as well.
¥ Develop the right reward system- In order to want to do the activity again, it needs to make you happy in some way! Doing a hobby you like will probably bring enjoyment once you get to doing it. But sometimes our goals are for practical purposes and we might not love it at the start. This is where pairing the routine with another reward is helpful. If you don’t like walking all that much but want to start for your health, what do you like to do that you can pair with it? It is seeing friends for a group (socially distant!) walk? Or listening to music during the routine? Or is the right reward for you to be acknowledged for your efforts by getting support from friends or family? Figure out what you love the most to make the reward fulfilling for you.

Tell us about your habits. Is there something you’ve tried to make a habit of? What do you think the right cue and reward would be for you to succeed?
