Happy birthday Commander Marcos A. Torres
Yesterday American Legion SSG Jason Vazquez Post #939 partnered with The Old Chicago Shrine Club to honor two very special Goldstar mothers on Goldstar mothers day (9/25).
It was such an impactful day to not only go out and give these Goldstar mothers a basket of goodies and gift certificates to dinner and a play, plus a spa day, but to sit and listen to Mrs. Anna Ware talk about her son Sgt. Albert Ware K.I.A. 12-18-2009 O.E.F and Mrs. Carmoneta Mayfield talk about son her SPC. Henry Mayfield Jr. K.I.A. 01-05-2020 O.O.S . These women could give a masterclass on what sacrifice, selfless service and grace under fire looks like. I want to thank them both for allowing us to share this day with them.
-Commander Marcos A. Torres
Today marks 21 years since Americans witnessed the largest attack on America soil since WWII. It launched our country into two wars across the entire globe against terrorism.
More that 3,000 civilians were killed between attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and airline flights hijacked and crashed by extremists. Since then, more than 7,000 US service members lost their lives fighting two wars, with more than 30,000 veterans of Post 9/11 dying by su***de, to date.
It would be naive to think we’ve seen the end of the cost we bear as a result of September 11, 2001. It has fundamentally changed who we are as a country and and who we are as Americans.
For certain, however, our country has demonstrated time again that it is willing to stand up and fight against any enemy, big or small should they threaten our existence. It demonstrated the ferocity for which we are willing to defend beloved country. It’s important to note that on a smaller scale, our military still seeks out terrorists that threaten Americans abroad and intends on eliminating them until all Americans and global citizens can live their lives free from danger.
For now, we wait and prepare for the next inevitable challenge to our country. We take the time to solemnly appreciate and celebrate the lives of the ones we’ve lost as a result of these brutal attacks on our citizenry. We take the time to appreciate the generosity of Americans who fought for services and resources to help veterans of the Post 9/11 generation that will help veterans of the future such as the PACT Act.
There is still much work to do. There are still enemies aboard. There are still needs we need to address to support the lives of our active military and our veterans of America’s wars. But as it was yesterday, today, and tomorrow, we still live in the greatest country on earth.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims lost on this day 21 years ago and with the families affected from the wars thereafter. Your sacrifice to this country shall never go unrecognized.
May God bless our military, our veterans, our Allies, and may God bless the United States of America.
First and foremost, our hearts go out to the victims of the Highland Park, Illinois community. What was supposed to be a day of celebration to honor the independence of our country has turned to an utter nightmare for the families of those who perished earlier today.
We, like many others who have lived in the Chicagoland area for much of our lives, know the North Shore communities have long been an example of safety and security. We have no doubt these communities will rally around these families to provide them much needed support and healing.
The giant elephant in the room has been our country’s inability to keep even some of our most cherished celebrations and safest communities from falling victim to violence and mass shootings. The time for action is now. Whether it be for advocating for mental health resources, more policing, a targeted gun prevention program, we expect each of you affected by these events to actively encourage your representatives to introduce legislation that provides the funding for such an endeavor.
We also ask our veterans to stand to at this moment. In what seems like a chaotic time in our country’s history, our leadership is needed now more than ever.
May God bless the families and victims of Highland Park, and May God continue to bless the United States of America.
