Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright Jr.
Doric #77
MWPHGL of Illinois
Member of the Phylaxis Society Harry A. Williamson Hall of Fame
Born on September 22, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. served in the military and earned his ministerial degree before becoming pastor at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ.(1972-2008) He is currently the Pastor Emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, a congregation that he increased to over 8,000 members and hosting over 70 ministries during his thirty-six-year tenure of leadership; distinguishing Trinity United Church of Christ as the largest congregation of the United Church of Christ.
Wright's father, the Rev. Jeremiah Alvesta Wright, was pastor at Grace Baptist Church from 1938 to 1980. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Henderson Wright, was a schoolteacher. She was the first African American to teach at Germantown High and Philadelphia High School for Girls, where she became the school's first black vice principal as well. Wright took an interest in religion at an early age. His parents challenged him to balance “the intellectual with the spiritual,” according to a Howard University biography.
Wright, inspired by John F. Kennedy's 1961 challenge to public service, gave up his student deferment to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He became part of the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. After two years of service, Wright transferred to the U.S. Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. After graduating valedictorian, Wright was trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating salutatorian. He was assigned as part of the medical team charged with caring for U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. Indeed, Wright was photographed caring for Johnson after his 1966 surgery. The White House awarded Wright three letters of commendation before he left the position in 1967.
Reverend Wright served as the co-founder of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, Inc. that represents a cross section of progressive African-American faith leaders and their congregations in the United States to preserve the rich legacy of their faith. Bringing light to community’s meaningful engagement in issues of social justice, education, advocacy and activism. Reverend Wright championed scholarship attainment by earning degrees with distinctions from Howard University, The University of Chicago, and The United Theological Seminary.
He has taught, mentored and molded theologians as he served on the faculties of Chicago Theological Seminary, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, United Theological Seminary, The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and McCormick Theological Seminary where he leads the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Doctor of Ministry Fellows who examine African-centered religious thought through the intersections of prophetic ministry and the study of Religions of the Black Atlantic Diaspora, Prophetic Preaching, Black Sacred Music, Black Theology, and Pastoral Care. Reverend Wright has received honorary doctorate degrees from Colgate University, Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Valparaiso University, United Theological Seminary, Chicago Theological Seminary, and Starr King School for the Ministry.
He has been recognized for service to the communities of the African diaspora and received a Rockefeller Fellowship. He was named one of Ebony Magazine's top 15 preachers in the United States and was also awarded the first Carver Medal by Simpson College, to recognize Dr. Wright as "an outstanding individual whose life exemplifies the commitment and vision of the service of George Washington Carver".
Rev. Wright and his wife, Ramah Reed Wright, have four daughters and one son.
