In a bold experiment in direct democracy, Alderman Joe Moore is asking the residents of the 49th Ward, to participate in the 49th Ward’s Participatory Budgeting process to decide how to spend the ward's infrastructure "Menu Money".
The 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting Leadership Committee got together yesterday evening for one last meeting under Joe Moore's tenure as alderman. They are the community volunteers who oversee the 49th Ward's Participatory Budgeting process. Many of these dedicated volunteers have been involved with "PB49" since Alderman Moore first introduced the process to the 49th Ward ten years ago. We shared some food and drinks and memories of an amazing decade of community-building and democracy.
Alderman Moore's successor got her start in the 49th Ward as a volunteer in our PB process and has pledged to continue participatory budgeting. She will do well to tap into the Leadership Committee's energy, enthusiasm and commitment to our neighborhood.
Members of the PB Leadership Committee with Alderman Joe Moore proud of their results.
The Spanish Language Committee supported the Zócalo project for 2 years and the community responded.Congratulations!

Jessica Eanes presents a proposal for four murals on CTA and Metra embankments and viaducts at tonight's Participatory Budgeting Spanish language Project Expo. Jessica is one of the hardworking community volunteers who have spent the last few months researching the feasibility of various project proposals offered up by community residents at neighborhood meetings last spring.
The 49th Ward is in its 10th year of Participatory Budgeting where the residents of my ward vote on how to spend $1 million of my discretionary capital improvement fund. I was the first elected official in the U.S. to implement Participatory Budgeting. It is now practiced by dozens of jurisdictions across the nation, including nine Chicago wards.
Last night we had more than 55 people come out to our first project expo at Sullivan High School to learn about the PB projects. See the pics!
The Planning Committee had a sunny day to meet with Gale Community Academy principal, Augustine Emuwa and discus the details of the upcoming opening of the Gale Learning Garden. We have been working all summer to get the garden ready, so please join us Tuesday, August 28th at 3:00pm for the public ribbon cutting ceremony and official opening of the garden!

Take a look at the garden below!
One of the most exciting PB projects to come out of 2017 is the Learning Garden at Gale Academy! This garden will be open to the community and is designed to be an innovative model of urban outdoor education. We broke ground on the Learning Garden on May 1st and project an estimated completion date of mid-June (weather permitting). Take a look at some photos of the progress we’ve made so far on the new garden!
Like, Share, and let your friends know about everything happening in the 49th Ward! We hope to see you in the garden soon!
How does the PB in the 49th Ward work, and how can you get involved!?
We have completed Neighborhood Assemblies and have moved into Step Two of the process. Volunteer Community Reps will be meeting throughout the summer to research and funnel project ideas and we need your input this August during the Project Expos!

The 49th Ward's Participatory Budgeting team had the honor yesterday of meeting and dining with Jose Ribeiro, Mayor of Valongo, Portugal. We are attending the Innovations in Participatory Democracy Conference together with participatory democracy practitioners from across the globe. Mayor Ribeiro instituted a participatory budgeting process in his city when he was first elected four years ago. He garnered 38% of the vote in his first race (lucky for him there are no run-off elections in his city). He was just re-elected with 60% of the vote, so he must be doing something right.
Joining Mayor Valongo and me are my staff assistants Cecilia Salinas, who coordinates my participatory budget process, and Wayne Frazier, who oversees the implementation of the winning "PB" projects in the 49th Ward
I'm enjoying a visit today to Central High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where the students are voting in an all-school Participatory Budgeting Election. Students are given a budget and then given an opportunity to propose various projects. All the students then vote for their favorite project.
The proposed projects include window graphics to demonstrate school pride, cell phone charging stations, more tables in the school cafeteria, a "chill lounge" where students can go and interact with their peers in between classes, and t-shirts with the schoo emblem on it.
Best of all, students who will be 18 years of age by the November election date are given an opportunity to register to vote!
And to think it all began nine years ago in the 49th Ward of Chicago, which became the first jurisdiction in the nation to adopt Participatory Budgeting!
