Free CME webinar TODAY at 2:00 PM ET: Practicing Cultural Competence and Humility in Epilepsy Care Settings

Register: https://aesnet.org/education/education/webinars

Presenter: Elizabeth Felton, MD, PhD, FAES
Moderator: Elaine T. Kiriakopoulos, MD, MSc

Cultural competence and humility are pillars of an equitable healthcare system; one that is sensitive to patient diversity and embraces clinician-patient communication that supports mutual trust and shared decision-making.

Presenters review how cultural competence and humility empower healthcare providers to bridge gaps and eliminate disparities in epilepsy care by challenging providers to reflect on and self-evaluate their own biases. Participants will learn to spot implicit biases, look critically at treatment plans to ensure fair treatment of all patients, and adapt communication strategies in an effort to eliminate bias and address inherent power imbalances between themselves and their patients.

This 60-minute webinar provides actionable recommendations for practicing cultural competence and humility in epilepsy care settings to improve outcomes for all patients.

Self-Management Workshops 08/11/2022

For many people with epilepsy, self-care and maintenance of a consistent routine are part of a strategy to help minimize the risk of seizures. Clinicians can play a critical role in supporting self-management by deepening their understanding of the social determinants of health and referring patients and caregivers to evidence-based programs and resources that build skills for managing daily life with epilepsy.

In partnership with Dartmouth Health, a coordinating center for the Managing Epilepsy Well Network, we are hosting 2 FREE full-day seizure self-management trainings for non-specialist members of the care team.

These trainings will take place on Thursday, December 1 at the Omni Hotel Nashville in Nashville, TN.

Registration is required and space is limited! Eligible learners will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

We are so excited that to be funding our 7th early career grant in conjunction with the American Epilepsy Society. This year, predoctoral student Letonia Copeland-Hardin—who works with the incredible Dr. Jennifer Kearney at Northwestern University is investigating how to better understand how severity of a disease can be influenced by gene modifiers. This is such incredibly important work to help better understand why there is such diversity in how patients present with genetic mutations on the same gene. Thanks to all involved and we can't wait to hear how things progress!
