About Embarc
Embarc is a three-year program that provides experienced-based learning opportunities to low-income high school students to inspire and prepare them for college and career success.
Why is Embarc vital?
There are some powerful systems in place that prevent students from succeeding - violence, segregation, institutionalized racism and poverty, underfunded schools and programs. These not only create real and visible barriers to success, but they work to impede the growth of youth psychologically as well.
How does Embarc work?
By supplying students with myriad positive models of success, journeying out of their neighborhoods to directly engage with the cultural and commercial worlds in our city, Embarc lays out the practical steps necessary for students to move towards their dreams.
How is the Embarc program implemented?
Embarc’s program pairs a three-year, fully-embedded, in-school curriculum with journey immersion, providing approximately 210 hours of Embarc programming to each student each year from their sophomore through senior year of high school. The program is taught by teachers at the schools who are supported by professional development and a coaching support staff provided by Embarc.
Embarc Partners
Embarc collaborates with more than 250 community partners to provide experiential learning opportunities outside of the classroom modeled after our core values: curiosity, leadership, collaboration, courage, drive, and change agency. Experiences include: journeys to businesses, nonprofits, university partners, and cultural institutions; curated, school-based workshops by community partners; and “speed networking” community socials with corporate partners. The design of Embarc’s program ensures that all experiences are coupled with a curriculum that supports growth and drives the goal of increasing academic achievement and achieving postsecondary and life success.
What are the results of Embarc?
We measure the effectiveness of our program by its success in turning our students from potential dropouts to high school graduates and postsecondary successes. As our program has grown, we are proud to have sustained important student outcomes, including an average 97% high school graduation rate, 85% college enrollment (including 2- and 4-year programs), and 97% overall postsecondary success. Furthermore, Embarc delivers a proven social return on investment of 7:1 due to the social savings of a high school graduate vs. a high school dropout.
