Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block homes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are one of the many stops on the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail across the southern part of the state.
The Sheppard Express profiled the area and the volunteers who make up Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block, Inc. (FLWBB). bit.ly/3MCTFcs
“Six Wright homes—two single-family and four two-family duplexes— still stand on the 2700 block of West Burnham Street. They are American System-Built homes, which was Wright’s broad gesture to a wide audience, says Mike Lilek, curator and volunteer with FLWBB.
Guests can visit two homes on the Burnham Block, including the home at 2714 West Burnham - a Model B1 of the American System-Built Homes Series. It has been meticulously restored to its 1916 appearance. This tiny house of 805 square feet combines nearly all of Wright’s design principles from his earlier Prairie period. Nature is an extension of the interior spaces; light fills the home, and privacy and serenity are primary.

The clients asked for a house big enough for their whole family to retreat to, with a large kitchen and living space; a design that refers to a rural vernacular and stands where an old barn recently collapsed; and energy efficiency, including no fossil fuel use. Our design features three integrated geometric volumes with a striking profile, passive solar heating, and solar panels for renewable electric generation.
