Repost from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights
Starting July 1st, 2024, standard driver’s licenses and state IDs are available to undocumented residents in Illinois!
This would not have been possible without the work of ICIRR members, elected allies, and community leaders that tirelessly worked to secure this win for our immigrant community.
Special thanks to Illinois Secretary of State and our bill chief sponsors State Senator Ram Villivalam and Representative Barbara Hernandez for your leadership in Springfield.
For more information about eligibility for an Illinois standard driver’s license, you can visit ilsos.gov/tvdl.
The AAAN is devastated to learn of the passing of our former colleague, and long-time member of the extended AAAN family, Rowaida Abufkaida.
Rowaida worked at the AAAN from 2012-2015 as a case manager in our Family Empowerment Program, and her dedication and professionalism ensured that hundreds of Arab families received the social services and advocacy they needed.
She was also the office jokester who always brought much needed joy and humor into the lives of all our colleagues and friends.
Rowaida is survived by her four children, Rania, Rana, Mohammad, and Amir, their father Ishaq, as well as by her mother, father, and siblings, who live between the U.S. and Palestine.
Please see the below message for the burial and Beit 3azza (House of Condolences) information. And we ask that all our friends and supporters keep Rowaida and her family in their thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
عظم الله أجركم و الله يرحمها.
Even at this difficult time for our communities here in Chicagoland and the U.S., as well as in Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, and the entire Arab, African, and Muslim worlds, from the AAAN to all who celebrate.
Our June 5th rally this past Wednesday marked 1 year since the murder of Palestinian-American Murod Kurdi.
Leanne Cusack struck and killed Murod Kurdi in front of his home in June of 2023. Instead of calling 911, she continued to drive down the block before calling her boyfriend and lawyer. Cusack had admitted to drinking prior to hitting Murod at the scene and refused a breathalyzer. While this was within her right, Oak Lawn Police should have brought her into the station for a mandatory blood draw. Instead, they let her go home that night with nothing more than a speeding ticket. Murod Kurdi and his family deserve justice, and Oak Lawn is responsible and complicit in covering up this crime.
Over 100 people joined us in support of Murod Kurdi and his family. During the public comment section of the meeting inside, Murod’s mother was treated disrespectfully by the police board. When one of the organizers dedicated the rest of their public comment time to a moment of science to Murod Kurdi, the police board decided to end his time early and move on to calling the next person. With the crowd riled up and upset with the disrespect shown to the Kurdi family, police began kicking people out of the meeting. Protesters sat on the floor until the public comment part of the session resumed and shut down the meeting!

AAAN is sad to announce the passing of our executive director Hatem Abudayyeh's maternal aunt - Fakria Abdelhaleem Saadeh (Um Mujahid), at the age of 88 in El Jib, Palestine.
She was a single mother of seven after her husband passed at a young age, and is survived by five daughters, one son, 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
An icon who dedicated herself to her country, her people, and her community we offer prayers to Hatem, Naima and Maisa in this difficult time.
The Beit 3azza (house of condolences) will be tonight at the Islamic Community Center of Illinois 6435 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60634.
May Fakria rest in power

‼️OAK LAWN RALLY RECAP + MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR JUNE 5! EXACTLY ONE YEAR SINCE MUROD KURDI WAS KILLED BY LEANNE CUSACK‼️
40 protesters came to show their support for Murod Kurdi and his family. During the Police and Fire Commission Meeting, protesters disrupted the meeting with speakers calling out the OLPD on their malpractices.
Murod Kurdi was a 28 year old Palestinian-American who was struck by driver, Leanne Cusack. Cusack was drinking before she struck Murod with her car in front of his house and continued to drive 2 blocks before stopping and calling her boyfriend, instead of 911.
Instead of OLPD following protocol for Cusack’s refusal of a breathalyzer, which would have been a forced blood draw, OLPD let her go home without charge for Murod’s murder with only a speeding ticket.
THE NEXT OAK LAWN RALLY WILL BE JUNE 5! EXACTLY ONE YEAR SINCE MUROD KURDI WAS KILLED BY LEANNE CUSACK!
For this reason, we are asking the Illinois Attorney General’s office to take immediate action by launching an independent and comprehensive investigation into the OLPD’s repeated violations of the rights of Arabs and other communities of color. In addition, the cops involved in the racist decision to let Murod’s killer go must be held accountable along with the 3 racist cops who beat Hadi Abuatelah nearly to death in July 2022.
