Re: NOTICE TO TENANTS – Addendum

We originallyΒ wrote to Loyola University of Chicago in JanuaryΒ to advocate for our neighbors and for ourselves, following the examples we experience every day in the arts community of care, excellence, and mutual support. When we say community we mean any audience that comes together to experience and share creative acts. The great art that is present in Chicago cannot happen without the support of audiences with space to converge. Values are not dictated by economic forces alone, but by how people choose to share their time with each other. The reality of artists and audiences in Chicago is that they are an ever-growing, changing, self-defining, and lasting group of people who are neighbors, employees, educators, students, and leaders. Anyone can choose to value and participate in arts and cultural activities. Loyola University is a private institution, and this shapes their sense of community. Their decisions related to 1226-1234 Loyola Ave harm both our community and their own through a withdrawal of support for cultural activities. Removing affordable housing and creative commercial spaces has a chilling effect on local culture, as does their lack of funding and public access in their own private exhibition spaces and properties. Powerful independent institutions with great resources hold great responsibility to care for the people in their midst. The individuals in control of these institutions can lead with their hearts and choose to contribute to the culture that defines our intersecting communities. We are reminded on a daily basis by our community that art gives people a reason to live.

Since we first wrote to and our neighbors regarding 1234 Loyola, we have the following updates:

Loyola desires to tear down the building as soon as possible citing β€œunprofitable” renovation expenses.

Loyola has not publicly announced specific plans to develop the space this building occupies.

On 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯, you are always welcome.

With a somber beach scene at its center, 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯Β reimagines and makes tangible the isolation and self-indulgence that arrives in the aftermath of crushing loss.

At the start of 2020, Akinbola began turning her gouache paintings, inspired by family photographs, into weavings. These works seek to expand the affective possibilities of what photographs communicate. In 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯,Β Akinbola expands this body of work, experimenting with the forms of sculpture and installation by attaching woven portraits on canvas to collapsible beach chair frames, which sit on a conspicuous island of sand in the middle of the storefront. The inclusion of sentimental items such as a red Coleman cooler from her youth and crushed cans of β€œGrief Tonic” further contribute to the transformation of the space into a site of grieving and remembering. On 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯, you wait.

On 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯, nothing exists but your breaking heart.

On 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯, time stops and gives into the ebbs and flows of tears, sleep, functional freeze, and occasionally, something like normalcy.

On 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯, everything is OK and nothing is OK.

On 𝘎𝘳π˜ͺ𝘦𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘒𝘯π˜₯, the sun keeps you warm even though you can’t see it.

Bimbola Akinbola is an artist, performer, and educator currently based in Chicago. Working at the intersection of theory, performance, and visual art, her scholarly and artistic work is concerned with the complicated and nagging nature of belonging, queerness, and the concept of family. Incorporating a variety of practices ranging from painting, weaving and collage, to durational line dancing, her work explores mark-making and performance as modes of organization, remembrance, and repair.

Roman Susan is planning the final year in our iconic flatiron storefront at 1224 W Loyola Ave in Rogers Park. We are excited to celebrate the creative legacy of this space, and we are seeking proposals that consider our original locale – site-specific, transformative – projects that might only be able to happen in our curious space!

For the next deadline, we will accept proposals through June 17, 2024. Some additional guidelines – we are seeking:

Solo projects by Chicagoland artists with new work for November 2024 to August 2025;

Curatorial proposals for two-person exhibitions featuring Chicagoland artists for November 2024 to August 2025;

Proposals for outdoor performances in August and September 2025;

Single works for consideration as part of a concluding group exhibition in August and September 2025.

What hasn’t happened here yet?

Artist Honorariums: Selected proposals receive project honorariums, scaled to the duration of the project. Roman Susan is a W.A.G.E. Certified Institution, and all artist fees meet W.A.G.E. payment standards.

VisitΒ romansusan.org/proposalsΒ  for more details and other Calls for Art and Participation.
