Drawing from more than 20 years experience in perfumery and aromatherapy, Body Chemistri's owner and perfumer, Heidi Sauhammel is drawn to the spiritual aspect of the world of fragrance and its effect on the psyche. The word perfume is derived from the Latin, per fumum, meaning "through smoke." In ancient societies, incense was a vehicle to communicate with and become closer to the he

The Poetry and Biochemistry of Acupuncture🌟

When an acupuncture needle is inserted into a point, it stimulates peripheral nerves triggering a cascade that causes changes in the brain and the internal organs activating neurons that control autonomic functions such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinogenital and musculoskeletal activity.

“Heidi’s calming presence and experience helps you to connect with your body and mind.”

A recent patient of mine said this after her first-ever acupuncture session. She was nervous about what the expect, and I started by asking her what had been going on in her life, as I normally do. If patients are open to sharing, this can be an opportunity to learn more about not only what is going on physically, but also emotionally. It’s helpful to know where the person is coming from that day. For this young woman, it was the grief and anxiety of a loved one passing.

Acupuncture is a mind/body relationship, and I strive to meet every new acupuncture patient where they are and make them feel comfortable. It’s a courageous thing to try something new. 💛

Acupuncture is an ancient, nature-based medicine dating back at least 2,000 years founded in the medical text the Nan Jing. In the Nan Jing, we are seen as mirroring Nature and the cosmos. The word “Shen” is loosely interpreted as how we see Spirit and is mentioned in the medical text 233 times.

Ed Neal, who has been practicing Chinese medicine for 40 years has done extensive study of the Nan Jing and says that Shen refers to an illumination; in the time the Nan Jing was written the illumination radiating from a star was also called Shen. Therefore, it can be said that a person in good health is illuminated from within - they radiate health. As part of the observation of a patient, a Chinese medicine practitioner is looking for “Shen” reflected in a person’s eyes.

One’s emotional landscape is a key component of a healthy eco-system. Today, there are over 8,000 studies on acupuncture worldwide in relation to 144 conditions. MRI scans conducted during acupuncture treatments have shown changes in blood flow and brain activity including a deactivation of the fight or flight response along with an endorphin release. Essentially, acupuncture is activating the parasympathetic nervous system and igniting the body’s own healing capabilities. This state helps regulate digestion, heart rate, breathing and allows for muscles to relax. 💛

To those of you who have gifted or encouraged acupuncture to family, friends, loved ones and co-workers, I thank you for your trust in me! Your support of my small business enables me to do this fulfilling work and I always enjoy meeting your loved ones! Most importantly, I extend my gratitude for being an advocate for this medicine and helping spread the word about the myriad of benefits (without side effects!).

One of my patients, when questioned by her co-worker about what she gets acupuncture for, replied: “Everything.” Sometimes you must experience it to understand and sometimes you don’t understand but know that you feel better. So if you are still looking for a Mother's Day gift, please consider giving an acupuncture session through a gift card! ❤️

You can follow the link ibelow to purchase a gift card for your mother or loved one. The link will direct you to your profile where you can make the purchase in the dollar amount of your choosing. I love helping my clients with their fertility journeys. With the change of season, many of us may be experiencing a pattern in Chinese medicine known as Liver Qi stagnation. In the female body, this pattern can impact the menstrual cycle and fertility.

The pathway of the Liver meridian runs from between the first and second toe upwards through the left and right sides of the pelvis and the ovaries. If the Qi (Energy) flow is obstructed it can impact the release of the egg from the ovaries and the movement of the fallopian tubes at ovulation. Most premenstrual symptoms such as breast tenderness and cramps are a sign of Liver Qi stagnation.

While poor diet and excess alcohol intake can play a role, stress is a key culprit. Thankfully acupuncture can help free the course of Liver Qi, boost fertility, and support the shift out of fight or flight mode that so many of us are stuck in. Additional relaxation techniques, such as meditation and regulating movement like yoga can help as well. Whether you’re experiencing issues from your Liver that are impacting your fertility or just causing you stress, I’m always here to help. 💗

As we enter into Spring, Traditional Chinese Medicine reminds us this is when our Liver is most active. If you view your body as a reflection of Nature, you can better understand why we’re experiencing tightened tension in our bodies and are more easily agitated. Spring is when Nature undergoes a rebirth and renewal with vigorous energy! If this sounds like you are experiencing, it can be a sign that your Liver Qi isn’t free-coursing as it should be.

Acupuncture helps get your Liver Qi in movement which will help release tension and stress, support emotional and hormonal balance, and harmonize your immune system. A few other lifestyle changes you can make this time are setting an earlier best time to ensure deep sleep, reducing consumption of foods that agitate the Liver like coffee, alcohol, sugar, and processed foods, and nourishing your body with Omegas 3s, microalgaes, and goji berries.

🌱 Remember, things will settle as Spring transitions into Summer. This is your time to harness the energy of growth, vision, and creativity.

Hi all, it's been a while! As many of you know, I'm Heidi the owner of Body Chemistri. For the past few years, this page has remained inactive as I transitioned out of my fragrance company and into pursuing my dream as a licensed acupuncturist. As time has gone on, I've missed this community and would love to reintroduce myself and my practice! 💛

When I was young, my mother taught me about alternative remedies that she grew up with in the Austrian countryside. I learned the importance of connection and community through my Austrian parents' tavern which became a meeting place for homesick immigrants. These teachings have helped inform me as a healer, where I strive to make the individual feel seen and supported.

I began my career in acupuncture in 2015 and over the years, I've developed a gentle and effective acupuncture technique that blends Chinese and Japanese styles. Through this, I've come to a deep level of understanding of patterns of imbalance with the individuals who see me. Since 2006, I have extensively studied intuitive energy work (to bring a level of greater consciousness) and meditation techniques (to lend a deep state of relaxation).

The practice of Chinese medicine is one of lifelong learning and I'm always in pursuit of the latest research and continuing education. I feel so honored to support my patients as they deal with challenges and transitions in their lives.

I'm going to start posting on here again but if you'd like to see more of what I am up to, please follow me on IG athttps://www.instagram.com/bodychemistri/

It's lavender season!

Lavender to quicken the senses, calm the nerves, flavor shortbread, make essential oil, lavender water, or a calming bath. In a sachet or wand it helps to make clothes and bedding smell sweet. The plants chemistry makes it an effective repellent to keep moths or bedbugs out of your drawers....and it's a beautiful addition to any garden, and bees love it too. The sun shines not on us but in us.
The rivers flow not past, but through us.
Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber
and cell of the substance of our bodies,
making them glide and sing.
The trees wave and the flowers bloom
in our bodies as well as our souls,
and every bird song, wind song,
and tremendous storm song of the rocks
in the heart of the mountains is our song,
our very own, and sings our love.
