Animal Medical Center of Chicago
"Warm Hearts for Cold Noses" Animal Medical Center of Chicago was voted Runner-Up Best Chicago Veterinarian in the Chicago Reader's 2013 Best of Chicago poll.
This is our second year in a row to be recognized as one of the best Chicago veterinary clinics. Our staff of Chicago veterinarians have been proudly serving the Chicago neighborhoods of Lincoln Park and Lakeview since 1990. Choosing a veterinary hospital is a very personal and important decision. During every visit to Animal Medical Center of Chicago, you'll be served by experienced, knowledgeab
Not a single sound gets past these incredible ears on one of our favorite frequent fliers, Watson! He announces himself every time he comes to see us, throwing back his head to holler in his perfect beagle voice and letting his magnificent ears extend to their full spread eagle form. Is he the winnder of the Ears of the Year award? Clearly he's taking first place, blue ribbon, platinum gold all-star champ, anything else would be a disgrace.
We are HUGE on veterinary dental care here, because we've seen how it can change lives for the better. Brushing teeth is certainly beneficial, we will never deny that - but we recognize that it's difficult to brush all sides of your pet's teeth, and that ultimately they need cleanings under the gums and x-rays to check on the status of the teeth, just like we do even with brushing our teeth at least once a day (if not more). Putting a pet under anesthesia is a big deal, but that's why we always check bloodwork beforehand and provide top quality care ensuring proper vitals monitoring and anesthetic management. Wanna join the Clean Teeth Brigade? Simply mention it at your next appointment and our staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have!
What's your pet's favorite summertime activity? The dog park is always a favorite for our canine companions! Do you have everything you need for the dog park? We can help you get your DFA tag and vaccines + stool testing done so your pup can run free in the local Dog Friendly Areas! What are y'all getting up to this weekend? Show us in the comments!
Happy 4th of July from the tiniest pup named Dennis!! We are CLOSED today for the holiday, but will be back open tomorrow at 8 AM bright and early to see everyone. Stay safe, keep your kitties and pups safe, and enjoy your holiday!
We love it when dogs love us. That's why we strive for the best, and take Fear Free care seriously. Founded in the concepts of respecting autonomy and prioritizing health as high as safety, we see the results daily. We're never going to restrain an animal forcefully just to get something done, we're going to listen to their body language and go with what works best for them. Some pets need their parents there, some need extra baby food and cheese to distract them, and some need anti-anxiety medications to not feel like they have to escape in a panic. We know that pokey things like vaccines and blood draws are no fun, but we make it as positive of an experience possible with tasty treats and lots of love from professionals who truly adore all animals. Curious about what Fear Free could look like for your pet? Call our office at 773-525-3353 to schedule your first appointment today!
Dog Beaches are SO MUCH FUN! But did you know that your dog needs to get vetted first before going to the beach? We can help! People bringing dogs into a Chicago Park District DFA (dog friendly area) must have both a permit with them and a registration tag for each dog. The registration tag must be on the dog's collar or harness. The permit and registration tag may be used at any officially sanctioned Chicago Park District DFA. We can help you get everything you need sorted for this, just ask one of our Care Coordinators when you schedule your pup's wellness appointment!
Cat owners! Is this your kitty?!? One of our clients found this very sweet cat wandering the streets of Chicago near the Schubert/Hermitage intersection. We scanned the kitty for a microchip, but none came up. Does this kitty belong to you? Reach out to us at 773-525-3353 and we will put you in touch with the rescuer, who is fostering the kitty until someone claims them. Share share share! Let's get this kitty home!
We've got all kinds of good stuff rotating in our snack stash. We usually have some special flavors like venison and lamb, and we've even got hydrolyzed cookies and peanut butter packets for the special allergy pups! Oh and of course we've got Churu and spray cheese for our kitty friends, and sometimes we get little gravy snack packs too! Can't forget about the baby food, that's a crowd favorite ♥ Does your pet have a favorite here? Anything we should get in stock next?
What do you think is going through Frankie's head?? That face can convince even the most stoic of hearts to cave in and give him a cookie, he is so perfect.
Swimming season is upon us! Not every dog will get an ear infection after swimming, but it can happen easily due to the moisture getting trapped in their ears. In order to prevent this from happening, you can use a general purpose ear cleaner with a drying agent, like EpiKlean, after they're done swimming for the day. Show us your water dogs in the comments!
We need your help! Pablo the puppy needs a forever home!
Meet Pablo, the sweetest puppy you'll ever see, an 18-week old pitty mix rescued by one of our employees from the streets of Chicago. Sadly, sweet Pablo had never been vaccinated, and contracted Parvovirus - one of the deadliest viral diseases a dog can get. Our hospital owner Dr. Solomon was heartbroken at his condition; she agreed to take him in as a temporary foster and covered the expensive treatment he needed at MedVet to survive this horrible illness. He's now in the temporary care of our practice manager Eric, and has been making HUGE strides in recovery! He is NEGATIVE for parvovirus, and is feeling better every single day! Pablo is adoring, gentle, and so, so sweet. He is incredibly chill and loves his kennel, he is such a well-behaved boy!
Pablo's needs: a calm and loving home that will give him structure and attention. He is currently potty-pad trained, and Eric is working to wean him off of them. He is still learning how to navigate the world, we aren't sure how he is with other dogs yet - but he loves cats! He is shy with strangers and new things, but he is cautiously curious and will do great with socialization. Due to his past illness, he is still underweight, but he is gaining weight every day! He will need his vaccine series finished, and he is not yet neutered. He took his first dose of heartworm/flea/tick preventative yesterday. He has had many names and is not attached to any of them, so you can choose one that you think fits!
Do you think Pablo would be the perfect addition to your family? Please contact our practice manager Eric at (872)-246-3593 to discuss setting up a meet-and-greet. Please share!! Sweet Pablito needs a home ASAP!
Today is Juneteenth! It is a federally recognized holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth celebrations then, like now, recognize the ongoing fight for human rights and equality and are commemorated through family cookouts, faith services, musical performances and storytelling. Show us how you and your pups are celebrating in the comments!
Happy Fathers Day! We love our dog and cat dads, thanks for being such awesome pet parents ♥ Show us your best pet dad photos in the comments!
Choose your own adventure! How do you decide who gets the cookie first? Or do you just try to give them a cookie at the same time? Who's sitting the bestest??
Summer is ALMOST HERE! Are your pets ready to handle the heat and the wildlife? Make sure your pet is up-to-date on their preventatives and vaccinations before heading out to socialize and play in heavy dog-traffic areas, this is a time of year where parasites are at their peak. Heartworm is no joke!! And no one wants Leptospirosis! Not sure if your pet is up to date? Just give us a call and we can figure out what they need to stay protected!
Is your pet worried about thunderstorms and fireworks? It's very common for dogs and cats to be afraid of loud noises like storms and explosions, if this is your pet you're not alone! So many pets benefit from anti-anxiety medications for these types of events - we can't explain to them it's not going to hurt them or go away soon, they can't understand why it sounds like the world is crashing down around them. If you think your pet is anxious about these things, we want to help! If you're already on the medication train, then make sure you're prepared and don't run out when you'll need it most! We're here to help ♥
We've been seeing so many amazing puppies and kittens this season!! Do you have a new friend in your family? Have they been getting their vaccines and routine check-ups as they're growing? Don't hesitate to schedule your puppy visits, they need to be protected against heartworms, fleas, and ticks, and vaccinated against deadly diseases!
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!! Animal Medical Center is very proud of our LGBTQ+ staff, we are a wonderfully diverse workplace that supports identities from all walks of life and love! We believe here that love is love, and that everyone deserves to be respected and treated equally, with honor and care. Join us in celebrating Pride Month! We would LOVE to see pets in rainbow/flag gear, send us your rainbow bedazzled critters!
What do you think is on your cat's To Do List today? Or your pup's? Tell us all about the mischief and mayhem, we wanna see it!
Happy Memorial Day! We're closed today in remembrance of the fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Show us how you're spending the holiday in the comments!
Is your pet protected against parasites? How do you know if your pet is safe from terrible parasites like heartworm and tapeworms? Keep them on their preventative and test every year! Heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives do so much more than you'll ever realize. Keep your pet safe and stay on prevention all year round!
Have a great Monday!! As the weather gets warmer, we're getting busier, so here's to another week of saving the day ♥
Weather forecast is saying 75 degrees and sunny this weekend! What amazing adventures do you and your furry friends have planned? Tell us all about it and show it off in the comments!
Happy International Family Day! Billy and The Babes are doing GREAT!!! Touched By An Animal has been taking wonderful care of them, and Billy is settling into momma life quite nicely. The babies are growing and happy, they love climbing all over Billy and sleeping in a giant pile all together. Touched By An Animal has SOOOO many kittens and momma cats available who all need loving homes, and Billy will soon be one of them! She has a long few weeks ahead of her, and will need to get vaccinated, spayed, and cleared for adoption. You can help the amazing people at Touched By An Animal by donating on their website, every penny helps!
In honor of Mother's Day, we have a special bunch of kitties to introduce.... Billy and the Babes! Billy is an incredibly sweet 8-month old kitty who was abandoned by her family when they moved away. She was never spayed, and being stuck outside, she ended up pregnant. A kind neighbor was able to catch her, and realized that she was VERY close to giving birth. Cue a phone call to their vet assistant friend/our employee Jo, and Billy ended up in Jo's bathroom within the hour. Jo realized that Billy was going into labor, so they set her up with a nesting space and everything she needed. Poor girl was so hungry, and soooo sweet and loving, she came out of her shell and wanted so much affection. She knew she was safe to have her babies. Around 4:45 AM, the first kitten arrived! She gave birth to 5 babies total over the course of 8 hours, some of them with extra toes!! Even more miraculously, a local rescue called Touched By An Animal was able to make some magic happen and took Billy and her babies in immediately. They are safe and warm and cared for, and will be available for adoption very soon!! Billy is not the only nursing mom in their shelter, they have SO. MANY. KITTENS!!!! They are a wonderful rescue with lots of available kitties right now, so many of them need fur-ever homes!
We pride ourselves in excellent care for animals of all ages, but especially senior pets. We know how hard it can be to manage their medical conditions, as so many of our staff here have elderly pets of their own. Winnie (pictured) is 18 years old this month, and has been thriving despite having been diagnosed with kidney disease almost 2 years ago. In fact, she was able to get a dental cleaning with 14 extractions despite her CKD and with minimal impact on the kidneys thanks to the amazing anesthetic protocols that we implemented. Happy Birthday, Winnie! Do you have a super-senior that we take care of at AMC? We would LOVE to feature them on our social media! Simply text our office phone number two things: a few cute photos of your pet, and their story. We can't wait to hear about your elderly critters!
Meet Bert! This little kitty was rescued by one of our veterinary assistants over a year ago, and this photo is from his one-year check-up! He was rescued and brought to the hospital by our vet assistant Jo, and then ended up finding his forever home with another vet assistant, Jesus. He lives with a spunky yellow lab named Ethan, and he even learned how to sit for treats from watching his dog brother! What a cool cat ♥
We LOVE doing happy visits! It's hard for puppies to understand why we do all of the things we do, like shots and nail trims - but stopping by for some fun visits to just get treats and lots of love can be a great way to help them associate the vet with good things!
In case you didn't know, we got the good stuff here... like Milo's Chicken Meatballs and Nutrish mini-burgers! We love sharing the best of the best with our furry friends when they come to see us, because we know how valuable a delicious treat like that can be for them! What's your pet's favorite special snacks? Tell us below!
We had such a fun time celebrating our Care Coordinators and appreciating all of their hard work last week! Our manager made each person a customized tumbler with their pets and kids photos on them, they turned out so cute!! Say an extra thank you to your Care Coordinators today (and every day!), they work incredibly hard at keeping the well-oiled machine that is AMCOC running every day by ensuring our clients can get the care they need. They're the front lines for customer care, and the first voice you will speak to any time you call our office. Join us in appreciating them extra hard this week!!
