Red Door
Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter that rescues dogs, cats and rabbits Since the Middle Ages, a red door has been the symbol of a safe haven.
This is what Red Door Animal Shelter provides for the animals in its care. In the Chinese art of feng shui, a red door brings luck to those who live behind it. This is what Red Door wants for the animals in its care. Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter committed to helping animals in need. Its primary focus is on the rescue, shelter and adoption of cats, dogs and rabbits—the three most po
Happy Furever home Friday!
Griffin and Pumpkin are a purrfect pair. At Red Door they were inseparable. When their adopters came in looking for just one cat, they were quickly won over by this sweet pair. They are always up for snuggles, and have each other for constant companionship. Their furever home also has giant windows so they have appointed themselves neighborhood watch… of the squirrels.
Please make it stop.
Monty and Phoebe are a pair of petite white buns who were part of a large rescue in Wheeling - a 🔥spot this summer, no thanks to a backyard breeder. 1but a huge shout out to Dumped Bunny for saving M&P and 11 babies.
Starling is beautiful bun found one night by 2 good Sams in Logan Square. Since the shelter is full, they graciously agreed to foster the bun for a couple weeks. ❤️It takes a village!
Stork was fortunate to be rescued from the "wild" but bright to animal control where she soon gave birth to 7 babies. Giving the scary and loud environment at animal control we knew we had to bring mom and her litter to the shelter, even though there wasn't space. Sadly, two babies have passed and we are praying that the rest will make it. Mom appears to be a too young Flemish giant.
Our shelter is overflowing with bunnies. If you have rabbit experience, please send an email to:
[email protected]
We'll provide the supplies, you provide the love, playtime and salads.
Today we remember one of the CLUE babies born in 2015. Mr. Green (Kobe) found a great home and a bunwife with R.D. alum, Jeanie. Mom and dad remember him,
"Kobe, our beloved lop of 9 years, passed away peacefully in the comfort of dad and mom's arms. Kobe was adopted from Red Door and since then he was family. He enjoyed hanging out with mom and dad, day or night, he loved to soak up all the ear rubs he could get, and was all around an adventurous and curious bun. Every morning he would be at our feet ready for breakfast. We are comforted by the fact that Kobe lived a full, spoiled life and spent every moment knowing that he was so loved. Binky free sweet Kobe.
Rest in peace with baby sister,
Jeanie. "
🌈Binky free at the Kobe. Jeanie has been waiting for you. ❤️
Meet the new strays:
Sandpiper is a chocolate brown sable who was picked up by animal control on the south side of Chicago. He is as sweet as he is smooth.
Bobwhite is a blue eyed dilute harlequin lop who was also found on the south side. 🤔Are there breeders nearby? We don't often see such fancy rabbits.
Emu is a petite English spot saved by good Sams in Wheeling. They gratefully fostered emu until we had space open up this weekend.
Happy Furever home Friday!
Yesterday was 4 years since Chloe and Kit found their furever home! This pair couldn’t be happier; they get unlimited pets, awesome toys, and newspaper ads to lay on whatever they want. We especially love the photo of a happy Kit, with Chloe contemplating mischief in the background. Happy 4th Gotcha Day to these two cuties!
We are so thrilled to announce that we surpassed our Gimme Shelter! fundraising goal thanks to all of YOU and the support of an anonymous matching donor. Your hard work ensures that the animals in our care will get everything they need until they are adopted into forever homes.

The babies are ready to be weaned and will need to go to foster homes in same s*x pairs. We are looking to place these babies for the next couple months until these they are old enough to be spay neutered.

Back in 2019 we took in a handsome silver lop. "Longfellow" actually rescued himself by approaching a handyman who was painting a patio. He begged for some food and the painter couldn't resist that adorable face. For days, the painter searched for the rabbits owner not knowing that abandoned. Rabbits are a "thing." Not long after this bun's arrival to our shelter, he was adopted by Heather and renamed Gandalf.
"I just want to say thank you so much for adopting Gandalf/formerly Longfellow out to me in May 2019. He lived a wonderful life with me and a roommate rabbit named Betty for the past 5+ years and I cherish him greatly. He was a wise teacher, comforting cuddler, and an entertaining personality. He loved napping on air vents, eating banana, loads of hay, greens and treats, and hopping his little routes throughout the house on his time. He would then hop back into his exercise pen when he had his fill for the day.
Binky free sweet boy❤️🐰 We are so happy you had a good life despite your rough beginning.
Thank goodness we don’t count on the rabbits to manage our finances. But Sequoia’s right! A generous donor has offered to match $10,000 and tomorrow is the last day to reach our goal! Please consider contributing so we can take care of these babies (and teach them math). Link to the donation page is in our bio and on our website!
Happy Furever Home Friday!
Two is always better than one - meet Pepito and Louise. This adorable duo bonded at Red Door and were adopted as a pair to their furever home. Over the years their furever family has welcomed two new additions. That just means more love, more pets, more fun at story time, and of course more cuteness.
Speaking of two for one, an incredibly generous donor has offered to match donations made to our Gimme Shelter fundraiser up to 10k. Help your donation make double the impact, and help buns like Pepito and Louise find their furever homes. Visit our linktree to donate and tell a friend!
The buns thoroughly enjoyed this recent donation of applewood sticks. Do you know what they would love even more? A matched donation!
Make a donation in the next four days to our Gimme Shelter fundraiser and a generous donor will match up to $10,000. How cool is that?

🌈❤️🐇Today we remember a sweet Rex who left this word too soon. As many rabbit owners know dental abscesses are one of the worst conditions a rabbit can have. Even with the best veterinary care. abscesses can be tenacious. Unfortunately for Gigi, her family had to make the extremely difficult choice to let her go in order to end her suffering.
"Our hearts are heavy as we bid farewell to our precious Gigi, who left us far too soon. Her journey to us was marked by hardship, evidenced by her ripped ear and scarred eye - silent testaments to her past struggles. Yet her resilience and capacity for affection were truly remarkable.
"From the moment she entered our home, she captured our hearts with her endearing quirks: her cautious tiptoeing on slippery floors, clever hideaways in dining chairs, and her uncanny ability to find the coziest and safest spots in the house. We delighted in discovering that she was ticklish, watching her react with an almost human-like glee. Her binkies looked like bucking broncos with her head down and her feet flicking up. She brought us endless joy.
"Our time together was cut short, but the love Gigi brought into our lives will last forever. Rest now, sweet girl. You are missed more than words can express."
Happy Furever Home Friday!
The adorable Reggie was abandoned at a vet’s office after suffering some pretty horrific injuries. He got a happy ending though, and was now lives like a king in his furever home. You can follow him and his great life
For his 6th birthday he’s helping to raise money for our Gimme Shelter fundraiser. If you want to help buns like Reggie find their furever homes please consider donating via the link in our linktree.
Benny Bunny hopped onto the Instagram sniff test bandwagon. You failed.
Cassidy is having a wonderful dream about a world where she didn’t already eat her salad and she has plenty left to enjoy. She’s unfortunately in for a rude awakening.

Despite having no space, we couldn't say no to these dumped buns:
Cardinal and Canary are a male/female pair of rescued by a good Sam near downtown Skokie. They were both thin, dehydrated, and covered in urine.
Kingfisher is a blue eyed gray with a curious white spot on his head. He was found by a good Sam near Cumberland woods.
During the summer space is tight and funds are low. Please consider a donation to our Gimme Shelter! campaign to help rescued rabbits like these. Click here:

Remember our Metra Train Bunnies? Well adorable Trax was adopted a few weeks ago!
This little guy is absolutely *loving* his furever home. He flops, relaxes in bed, gets treats, and pretty much runs the place now. His human loves his nightly zoomies, and just how much of a snuggle bunny he’s become. We love seeing him so happy!

Happy Furever Home Friday!
Cookie (formerly Disco) bonded earlier this year with the sweet Sprucie. Unfortunately shortly after he was adopted he had a bout of GI stasis. Spricie and their human helped Cookie feel better, and really enjoy his furever home.
Cookie is also a tripod bun, but he doesn’t let that stop him. He likes to use his castles as springboards to escape from his pen at night! Like any good bun he uses his freedom to jump on top of his human and wake her up. Just look at his sweet face, it’s impossible to stay mad at this crazy guy!
