On view through January 21, 2024 – Elizabeth Atterbury's exhibition 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 at The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA.

This yearlong installation in public spaces around the Clark features work in a variety of media by Elizabeth Atterbury (b. 1982, West Palm Beach, Florida; lives and works in Portland, Maine). Atterbury makes vibrant geometric prints using chine collé and embossment; textured monochrome reliefs in raked mortar; and wood and stone sculptures that greatly enlarge objects of personal significance. Throughout her practice, Atterbury is interested in questions of legibility and opacity, improvisation and play, and object-making and remaking as ways to think through her interrupted family histories and Chinese American heritage.

Opening today– Paul Mpagi Sepuya's solo exhibition 𝘓𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘳 opens June 3 at Galerie Peter Kilchmann, Paris.

𝘓𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘳 is the latest in Sepuya’s project DAYLIGHT STUDIO / DARK ROOM STUDIO (2021 - ongoing), in which his anachronistic take on 19th and early 20th century Western European and American photo studios becomes a site for both playful and tensely charged interactions and reflections, bringing a contemporary Black and q***r perspective to the origins of desire within the medium. The show consists of works from several connected bodies of work within the series: Daylight Studio, Twilight and Dark Room Studio, and introduces new works: Silver, Flowers, and Garden Prints.

𝘓𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘳 runs concurrently with 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩/𝘗𝘶𝘭𝘭, a solo exhibition with works from the same series that opens on June 10, 2023, at Galerie Peter Kilchmann in Zürich, Zahnradstrasse.

This dynamic installation of the photography collection unearths new narratives of influence, innovation, and belonging from the medium’s invention to the present day.

Rather than following a linear chronology, Sightlines explores a series of stories and perspectives, spotlighting recent additions to the collection throughout. Some galleries focus on an individual artist or series, like Louis Carlos Bernal’s vibrant color photographs of Chicanx families in the Southwest, or Dorothea Lange and Pirkle Jones’ poignant documentation of the demise of a small town in Napa County. Others consider the evolution of a single theme across the history of the medium, such as studio portraiture or the relationship between the body and landscape. The exhibition culminates with a generous selection of works made without a camera, probing the question of what constitutes a photograph.

CHICAGO | OPENING TOMORROW

Join us tomorrow for the opening reception of Anya Kielar's solo exhibition 𝘔𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮 from 5–8pm.

Kielar melds aspects of sculpture and painting, creating a unified field of symbols and dimensionality that compresses formal distinctions. Each of the four shadowboxes in the exhibition contains a slightly larger-than-life female bust or figure composed of fragments set in a relief sculpture. The figures are wrapped in patterned textiles created using techniques such as stenciling, painting, dyeing, and spraying, allowing the illusory field of colors and marks to move along the skin of the shifting sculpture. This technique creates a surface that is seamless and soft on the eye.

This volume features scholarly essays alongside richly illustrated plate sections and texts focused on an intergenerational group of 37 artists working across the Americas and Europe. A radical rethinking of contemporary art in the Caribbean, 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘮 reveals the region as a place where the past, the present and the future meet—where continuous exchanges forecast what is to come while remaining grounded in the histories that shape the present.
