Why is our Up on 10 Concert so awesome? Featuring current composers! Join us on Thursday at 7PM to hear several pieces by the fabulous Reena Esmail, Composer. We adore her Winter Beviary!
Indian-American composer Reena Esmail works between the worlds of Indian and Western classical music and brings communities together by creating equitable musical spaces. She is the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s 2020- 2023 Swan Family Artist in Residence and Seattle Symphony’s 2020-21 Composer in Residence.
Why is our Up on 10 Concert so awesome? Guest artist friends! Join us on Thursday at 7PM to hear the fantastic Liza Malamut, featured on several William Byrd arrangements by our own Paul Von Hoff.
Liza Malamut specializes in historical trombones and is Artistic Director of The Newberry Consort in Chicago. She is also a founding member of Incantare, an ensemble of violins and sackbuts. A passionate teacher and researcher, she teaches sackbut at Indiana University and is a coeditor and contributor for the book Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy: New Perspectives, winner of the 2023 Ruth A. Solie Award. When not engaged in musical activities, Liza can usually be found on a hiking trail somewhere, buried in a good book, or both.

1. What instrument do you play? A Rauch double. One of the last ever made!
2. What is your go-to, must-try Chicago restaurant and favorite order there? Hopleaf in Andersonville! Toasted Nueske Ham and Gruyère Sandwich and a Pauwel Kwak (comes in the coolest glass ever).
3. What do you consider to be the most underrated fruit? I am totally veggies over fruit. Can I say brussels sprouts? I love them.
4. What was your first hourly job? My orthodontist asked me if I wanted a job in high school, so I was a receptionist after school.
5. What is your spirit animal? A flamingo! Hang out in the water with my friends and be all fabulous and eat so much shrimp that I turn pink? Absolutely.

1. What instrument do you play? NY Bach ML 43.
2. What is your go-to, must-try Chicago restaurant and favorite order there? Any sandwich from D’Amato’s.
3. Which actor would play you in a movie? Dolph Lundgren, maybe offset by a couple decades and if I worked out more.
4. What do you consider to be the most underrated fruit? Rambutan.
5. What was your first hourly job? Panera! Making sandwiches and flatbread pizzas when they were testing them in Florida. Bummer they never made it onto the national menu.

2. What is your go-to, must-try Chicago restaurant and favorite order there? Gene & Georgetti Italian Steakhouse for a NY strip.
3. What do you consider to be the most underrated fruit? Kiwi.
4. What was your first hourly job? Kohl’s cashier.
5. What is your spirit animal? A dolphin, specifically an orca, the honey badger of the sea.

1. What instrument do you play? New York Vintage Bach 36b (1949) with refinements by Dana Hofer.
2. What is your go-to, must try Chicago restaurant and favorite order there? Rick Bayless’s Frontera Grill and their Tortilla Soup.
3. What is your spirit animal? A cat.
4. What do you consider to be the most underrated fruit? Avocado.
5. What was your first hourly job? Barnes and Noble Bookseller.

We had a wonderful time workshopping Reena Esmail, Composer’s quintet Khirkiyaan a couple weeks ago. If you don’t know her music, check it out! She is an incredible composer and even more wonderful person.
What a weekend!! Hosted our first ever brass hang/concert featuring quintets from DePaul, Univeristy of Illinois and Northwestern! Through music we can bring people together in different ways and to see the young people of the Chicagoland area form one community is priceless!! More of these to come!!!

Saturday (2/11), they will be doing a reading session of student works, and on Sunday (2/12), they will be doing a brass masterclass and giving a recital at 8pm in Rosch.
