What is Shaolin? What is Shaolin Kung Fu?
Shaolin is a meditation practice used to determine the state of affairs lying beneath the surface of a human being, a way to observe the universal wisdom or intelligence that lies beneath the patterns of movement of the human body. Originating in the hills of the Songshan Mountain, the practice deals with the true nature of humankind, the true nature lying beneath the mind’s reality.
It is also a physical exercise that allows a person to enter a meditative state through physical movement, resulting in the development of a human being’s fullest potential. Combined with the practice and wisdom of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, a unique faith and culture practice brimming with the possibility of experiencing the light of illumination and the enlightenment promised by following the Buddha’s Way was born. This is Shaolin Kung Fu.

“Since we Shaolin monks devote our life to the cultivation of mindfulness, our practice of Shaolin Kung Fu likewise forms part of the Buddhist way of living. Those with a deeper or a comprehensive understanding of traditional Chinese Wushu are aware of the three levels of Chinese Wushu, namely, Wuyi (Wushu arts, martial arts), Wuxue (martial studies) and Wudao (martial way). Actually these three levels can also be considered as three spiritual states of Wushu. As for practitioners of different states, even if they practice the same Tao Lu (routines or forms), the experience they have are quite different.
The performance of Wushu is based on the life pursuit, daily conduct and meditation of the practitioner. In the course of Wushu practice, an accomplished practitioner demonstrates not only his/her mastery of martial arts, but also displays his/her martial cultivation, even his/ her ideal of life and spiritual state. On the contrary, a practitioner of average performance, for lack of spiritual cultivation, demonstrates the martial arts and impresses us with his/her brute strength and aggressiveness, rather than the disciplined, balanced character of a martial artist, the wisdom, and selfless devotion of an accomplished practitioner as well.”
