The Mansueto Institute co-sponsored the Neighborhood Innovation Summit with Gambit Chicago on July 23 and July 24 at the International House at the University of Chicago, bringing together youth participants ages 12-24 from the Englewood neighborhood, along with their families and community stakeholders, to serve as Urban Development Ambassadors. This two-day event aimed to empower students to make an impact in the South Side of Chicago by teaching them about urban land acquisition and development and ultimately proposing a redevelopment of a plot of land in Englewood.

The summit is one of six Urban Innovation Grants for Student Organizations that the Mansueto Institute awarded in July to support University of Chicago student groups working on events, research, or other efforts focused on critical issues and topics impacting cities. These inaugural grants engage with a range of issues affecting the future of cities, such as sustainable and equitable neighborhood development in Chicago, digital governance and smart cities, and urban diplomacy. Gambit Chicago is led by Joseph Olalusi, a South Side Native, Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago student, and Obama Foundation scholar.

We want to recognize collaborators, partners, and community organizations that were involved including Gambit Chicago, Urban Equities, Inc, International House at the University of Chicago, UChicago Office of Civic Engagement, Cook County Land Bank Authority, TEAMWORK ENGLEWOOD, Inspired Journey Design Studio, UrbanWorks, Ltd., Planning Resources Inc., and Cook County Assessor's Office.

Are you a Chicago resident? The Chicago Neighborhood Project is asking you to help define your neighborhood by filling out a three-minute survey to draw your neighborhood's boundaries. The survey aims to align official definitions with the way the real experts - Chicago residents who travel in and around the city every day - truly perceive and live in their neighborhoods. Completing this quick survey will enter you for a chance to win a $50 gift card. It is available in multiple languages and can be accessed at https://chicago-neighborhoods.com

Bringing together experts from Chicago and around the country in city government, housing organizations, design, and academia, “Beyond the Single-Family Home: Zoning, Equity, and Access,” will center around common exclusionary zoning practices in U.S. cities, like zoning for single-family homes over denser housing such as apartments, townhomes, and duplexes.

This one-day symposium hosted by the Kreisman Initiative on Housing Law and Policy at the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation will explore how a form of development so often identified with the “American Dream,” has contributed to some of the biggest challenges facing U.S. cities today, including unaffordable housing, lack of access to quality transit, and racial segregation. The event will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the David Rubenstein Forum, 1201 E 60th St., Chicago, IL 60637.

Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation

At the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, we study the fundamental processes that drive, shape, and sustain cities.

In the next 20-30 years, Earth will reach peak population, with the net population growth of 4 to 5 billion happening in cities. The Mansueto Institute creates the research, evidence, and knowledge that empowers citizens from the realms of policy, activism, and practice to realize the potential of our increasingly urban world.

Our researchers come from the social, natural, and computational sciences, along with the humanities. Together, we pursue innovative, interdisciplinary scholarship, develop new educational programs, and provide leadership and evidence to support global, sustainable urban development.
