Wishing everyone a meaningful and heartfelt Memorial Day from KDM Engineering.
Happy Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage month! The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
The IEEE PES T&D Conference & Exposition 2024 puts the future within reach. Visit our booth ( #2652) to see next-gen solutions that will make tomorrow’s grid today’s reality. See you May 6th-9th in Anaheim, California!
Almost every electrical engineering class you take in an EE program is really a mathematics class in disguise. Calculus is everywhere in addition to linear algebra and even some differential equations. is coming to a close!
The aim of this month has historically been to increase the level of interest in the study of math, and to increase the level of public understanding and appreciation for the wide range of applications for math in fields as diverse as engineering, manufacturing, and medicine. KDM thrives through use of math and statistics, and we’ll continue to share our gratitude through our non-profit, Calculated Genius, and other ventures. Happy Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month!
We couldn’t end Women’s History Month without recognizing some of the influential women who put in work from day to day at KDM! Thank you for your dedication and commitment!
Katherine graduated college at age 18 and was one of 3 Black students chosen to integrate West Virginia University’s graduate school. Soon after, she worked as a mathematician with NASA and analyzed spacecraft flight paths. Katherine was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in STEM fields by President Obama in 2015 and she is the co-author of one of the first textbooks about space.
Pi Day is a day devoted to celebrating pi, the irrational number (approximately 3.14) that results from dividing the length of the circumference of a circle by the length of its diameter. This day commemorates the mathematical constant π and is celebrated annually on March 14.
Mary W. Jackson broke barriers and shattered stereotypes in the field of aerospace engineering. Her pioneering work paved the way for future generations of women and people of color to pursue careers in STEM. Jackson's determination, intelligence, and passion for space exploration inspired countless individuals around the world. Her contributions to the field of engineering will always be remembered and celebrated!
KDM spotlights Hattie Scott Peterson (1913-1993), who earned a bachelors in Civil Engineering from Howard University in Washington, D.C in 1946. She is known as the first female African-American civil engineer and trailblazer in the United States. In 1954 she joined the local U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), making history as their first woman engineer.
Today marks the 1st day of Women’s history month. As a Black-woman founded and owned company, we take great pride in championing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all that we do. We stand in solidarity with women everywhere, and we are committed to supporting and empowering women in our community and beyond. Born on April 23, 1856, Granville Tailor Woods was an American inventor and self-taught engineer. One of his most significant inventions was the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, enabling communication between moving trains and train depots. Despite his passing in 1910, Woods' legacy lives on through his inventions, inspiring future generations of inventors and engineers to push the boundaries of what is possible.
Thank you to the Women's Energy Network Chicago and Shayla Atkins for putting on a stellar event about leading with S.P.I.C.E. The KDM team showed major support and Atkins reminded us that:
"It's about understanding and harnessing your unique qualities, strengths, and values to not only reach your goals but to excel as a leader."
February 7th is National Periodic Table Day! Information in the periodic table helps engineers in all disciplines because we use elements in all facets of materials design. It was invented by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 and is an invaluable tool in our lives.
This month, we take special care to celebrate Black history and acknowledge the stories, struggles, and triumphs of marginalized communities within the Black Diaspora. At KDM, we are committed to driving change and will continue to push beyond barriers to create the most inclusive and equitable space that ensures engineering innovation has room to thrive.
