It was wonderful to spend time with Nina and Lise at the post-performance reception and to learn how it is to prepare and perform in a foreign language. Today we’re celebrating one of Sweden’s tastiest traditions: Cinnamon Bun Day!

Since 1999, Cinnamon Bun Day has been celebrated annually on 4 October, when around 7 million buns are sold. The cinnamon bun is an iconic element of Swedish fika culture and a classic symbol of Swedish fika abroad.

Did you know that the modern cinnamon bun was created around 1920? That was when goods such as sugar, butter and cinnamon returned to stores after rationing during the First World War.

Hanna Pylväinen is the author of the novels We Sinners, which received the Whiting Award, and The End of Drum-Time. Her work has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal; she is the recipient of residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Lásságámmi Foundation, as well as fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, a Princeton Arts Fellowship, and a Cullman Fellowship at the New York Public Library. She lives in Philadelphia.

About The End of Drum-time:
In 1851, at a remote village in the Scandinavian tundra, a Lutheran minister known as Mad Lasse tries in vain to convert the native Sámi reindeer herders to his faith. But when one of the most respected herders has a dramatic awakening and dedicates his life to the church, his impetuous son, Ivvár, is left to guard their diminishing herd alone.
