I finished weaving this red scarf on National Wear Red Day to raise awareness about heart ❤️ disease. It’s a great month to think about not only heart-healthy foods, but heart-healthy behaviors. Have you been showing yourself self love these days? I’ve been lighting more candles, buying myself more flowers and boiling cinnamon to make my home smell delicious 😋. Happy month of love and cheers (and dark chocolate 🍫) to a healthy heart!
Saw this on Instagram, and it moved me to tears. Working with clients who struggle with their weight gives me inside access to their thoughts and beliefs about themselves. I wish they could see themselves the way I see them! Sending lots of love to anyone who feels less than because of their weight or insecurities (like most of us in one way or another, right?).
Today at work we talked about how to read and understand nutrition labels. Some tips: check the ingredients. A short ingredient list usually indicates a cleaner product. If an ingredient isn’t something you’d potentially keep in your kitchen or sounds super science-y, I’d recommend putting it back on the shelf! Then you’ll want to check out serving size, carbohydrates (one serving is equivalent to 15 grams), sugar (less is more here of course, and be mindful of total sugars and not just “added” sugars) and sodium (140 grams or less is considered low) as indicators of overall health. Ideally, you want to get enough fiber (5 grams or more), vitamins and minerals. A 5:1 ratio of carbs to fiber is going to mean a better product for blood sugar balance and will keep you fuller for longer. Take a look at some of your kitchen staples and see how they stack up!

Learning lots at FNCE (Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo), our annual dietetic conference.
For instance, did you know that intermittent fasting could have powerful impacts on reducing the risks of cancer and other chronic diseases, and improves insulin sensitivity? Or that our microbiomes have their own circadian rhythms?
It's the 100-year anniversary of FNCE. A big thank you to the founders of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for bringing the importance of nutrition to the forefront of the health conversation!

My latest blog post discusses body image and how to use affirmations to love your body more. It's so great to replace negative thoughts with more positive ones...over time, it will become more natural. How do you buffer yourself against negative thoughts about your body? cindyklinger.com
This statistic makes me angry, sad, disappointed, compassionate, and wondering what everyone is thinking behind their facades. I'm watching an eye-opening documentary called "Embrace," about women's body images and unrealistic pressures and expectations places upon mostly women throughout our lives. Other surprising (or not) stats: 45% of women in the healthy age range think they're overweight. I see this in my practice often. 90% of anorexia and bulimia cases occur in females. Millions of dollars a day are spent daily around the world on fad diets. And this: More than 50% of 5-12 year olds want to lose weight. How can we change this body hatred? It's really pervasive...PS: looking for an image for this photo? It was hard to find a woman whose ribs weren't sticking out!
Dreaming of berry season on this rainy day in Chicago...it's just around the corner., and I can't wait! The list of health benefits of berries is looong. Their low sugar content and tons of phytochemicals and antioxidants make them produce superstars. They protect cells from damage, boost brain function, help protect the heart, support appropriate weight, and are recommended as part of a cancer prevention protocol. What's your favorite way to prepare these little gems? I prefer to eat them straight out of the package!
Check out my latest newsletter...I cover how to limit your food waste in honor of Earth Day, highlight some great new food products and feature a guest post by my brother Ben (a therapist in California who's written about how to gain control over the struggle with overeating).
