It’s food allergy awareness week and May is also Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Our own, Dr. Elizabeth Lippner, hosted a booth at Pacifica Square, an Asian lifestyle center, to educate about allergies in the Asian community. This year’s event is on May 18 if you’d like to check it out!
Here are a few facts about the risks of allergic diseases in Asian and Pacific Islanders:
* Asian American children have higher self-reported rates of eczema and food allergy and asthma, compared with Non-Hispanic White children.
* It is estimated that 8% of Asians in the United states have a food allergy.
* It is estimated that 6.3% of those with peanut allergy are of Asian heritage.
* Asian households with food allergic children have worse food allergy-related-quality of life compared to other races. This was completely independent of socioeconomic status.

A Phase 3 NIAID Trial finding suggests that antibody therapy with omalizumab has the potential to protect children from allergic reactions following an accidental ingestion. The FDA approved omalizumab (Xolair) for people with food allergy on February 16. Ask your allergist how this medication could help your child with food allergies.
