Here at EXTRAORDINARY TRAINING Rob Hirsh is well aware that taking on a personal trainer can run into bucks. At the gym I work out of there are trainers who routinely charge upwards of 80 and 90 dollars per session. Their turnover is tremendously high simply because no one can afford to stay with them! Call me out of touch, but I get ”charged up” by seeing my pupils (I hate hate hate the word ”cli

Alan Szafraniec is living proof that you truly are not only as young as you feel, but as rock hard as you are willing to work for it. Short of a blizzard, he bicycles to work downtown every day from Lawrence Avenue. He merely laughs at rain. In the nearly two years he's been with me, he's never missed a workout unless he was out of town. In a nutshell, his drive and determination are the reasons he has progressed from doing a full bird dog, with both knees and one leg off the ground, from fifteen seconds to a full minute; I've not had many pupils--of any age!--who can do so. Alan will demonstrate that move in a future video. Pump on Alan! Please remember to visit my website www.lakeview-boystown-training.com

Hi everyone! In addition to my regularly featured "Bodybuilding Bullets," I am starting a new occasional series I call "Core for more." When I first started weight-training in high school, and for many years thereafter, I had no conception of what core training was all about, or even meant! Working the stomach meant doing leg raises and sit-ups--or today's counterpart, crunches--and that was about it. But far more than just your abs, your core is comprised of your spinal erectors, re**us abdominus, internal and external obliques, hip adductors--and more. Not only is your core responsible for stabilizing your spine; but is very simply the seat of your health, your balance, and your physical well-being. To ignore your core is to ignore your quality of life.

That said, let us now turn over the floor to our two adorable babies (bet you wondered where they'd come in!). The fact is, they will never do more important core work their entire lives than in their early months of life when struggling to climb onto their own two feet. So my first core lesson of the day is something we can all do on our living room carpets. Take your cell phone in hand (silence it please! ha ha) and lie flat on your back. Now hold your phone towards the ceiling. Now I want you to stand, with the phone extended overhead the entire time. Pretend you are in a swimming pool and have to keep it from getting wet. Now lie back down and do it again. And again. And again. Six times in all. If this is too difficult, than okay, put the phone down and SIMPLY GET UP ANY WAY YOU CAN six times total from floor to feet. Now take a couple minutes to catch your breath, and then do it again! And don't ever stop! For just minutes a day, you are helping to keep yourself out of a wheelchair down the road. Never will USE IT OR LOSE IT have greater validity .

Okay, gang that's all for now. Stay tuned for more!

Now that the madness of local politics is behind us (well perhaps not the madness, but you know what I mean), it is time to refocus on something I DO have control over--helping my team members get the results they want. With that in mind, herewith another Bodybuilding Bullet by Rob, with the help of star pupil Mike Stevens. Take it away Mike! P.S. BREAKING NEWS THAT JUST CAN'T WAIT! And no, Trump hasn't been impeached--yet! (If I could give it to you I would--I'm only a personal trainer, ya know.) But a great piece of information nonetheless for all BABY BOOMERS comes courtesy of Men's Health Magazine. According to a new study by Penn State College of Medicine, "Lifting weights as you age cuts your risk of early death by 46%." If you've been at it all along, good for you, and keep going! If you've been thinking of getting started for a long time now, here is great incentive! I'm here to help with any and all your questions. In the meantime, please check out my redesigned website at lakeview-boystown-training.com

Hey everyone. Looks like we're getting big-time payback for our easy December. Not to worry--only 32 days until March, and before you know it we'll all be lathering up with Coppertone, and I'll be rolling my Harley out of the garage.

But until then: In order to celebrate the New Year, and also the launching of my completely redesigned website (lakeview-boystown-training.com), I am offering 20% off all my plans. In the meantime, remember to do all those things our Moms told us, like dressing in layers, covering our heads, and wearing good boots!

Hi gang! With the kick-off to summer officially here (finally!) I'd like to issue two reminders. You've no doubt heard both many times, but they bear repeating. Unless you are about to enter bodybuilding competition, forget about seeking a sun-tan. It is dangerous as hell, particularly tanning salons, which you have to be crazy to use. Look at the picture. Sexy huh? Since when is having skin like a crocodile attractive? And make no mistake--this is where anyone who pursues a deep tan year in and year out is headed. And of course it goes without saying that if you ARE outside for any length of time, load up on the sun-screen, even if it's cloudy. (I made the mistake of not doing so once and got heavily burned. Those rays get through!) Number two--stay hydrated! Particularly if you are outside for any length of time. Our friend Mr. Elephant certainly knows a thing or two. And Muscle Beach may be fun to visit, but keep your iron pumping in the gym where it belongs. Happy summer to everyone! Please remember to visit my website lakeview-boystown-training.com

As a public service announcement, and due to popular request,I am repeating a post from last January.
This is the time of year when many people are considering taking on a personal trainer. Wonderful--but at the same time, beware! For every wonderful trainer out there who truly cares, there is, unfortunately, an unscrupulous yahoo who calls himself a trainer but in fact is not only woefully incompetent, but unscrupulous to boot. Here are just a few of the pitfalls to watch out for.
Be wary of a trainer looking for a huge
commitment up front. A complimentary session to see how you click is not
an unreasonable request from your end. If the trainer balks at that, walk away
quickly. A good trainer will be eager to show you he or she is for real. Once they've got your money it’s too late to
find out that they routinely show up late or blow off appointments altogether,
or spends your training session with one eye on their
cell phone. In fact, having a trainer is not unlike having a doctor or an
accountant. Find a relationship that works—for you. If you see results and look
forward to your sessions, then chances are you’ve struck personal training
gold.

Welcome to Rob's training tip of the day. Let's talk dips, an old war horse that can't be beat. If you're aiming to target your triceps, particularly the outer head, perform them as demonstrated by our young lady. Keep your body perpendicular to the floor, your elbows tight against your sides, and squeeze hard at the top to recruit all 3 heads. If hitting your pecs is your goal, follow our male model's lead and position your hands a bit farther back on the bars, flare out your elbows, and lean into the movement. This will reassign the emphasis away from your triceps. For both movements bend your knees up and behind you for greater stability. Please visit my website www.lakeview-boystown-training.com
