It all started in Chicago back in 1869. Ives W. McGaffey of Chicago obtained the first American patent for a suction-type vacuum cleaner or "improved sweeping machine" called the "Whirlwind." It was a hand-operated tool with a bellows mechanism that created suction. It was difficult to use because the operator had to manually turn a crank while pushing it across the floor. McGaffey’s invention was not a motorized or electric vacuum cleaner, but it is known as the first hand-pumped vacuum cleaner in the US and laid the groundwork for the ultimate evolution of vacuum cleaning technology. It wasn't until 1907 that a janitor, James Spangler, invented the first portable electric vacuum cleaner and later sold the patent to William H. Hoover, who went on to become so synonymous with vacuums that it was genericized as a household term for vacuuming!

Happy Fun Fact Friday, everyone! Did you know that in August of 1967, Chicago unveiled the iconic Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza? Up to this point, most civic art in the US was more traditional: busts of political leaders and statues of military heroes. This 50-foot-tall, 162-ton untitled sculpture in Daley Plaza was an abstract masterpiece and a gift from the artist to the people of Chicago. It was created with U.S. Steel from Gary, Indiana, which is the same COR-TEN steel as the Civic Center that it stands in front of. Picasso himself had never created a large public sculpture before and died six years later without ever seeing it in person. It has since become a beloved symbol of our city's rich cultural history. 🎨✨

Did you know about the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" on Chicago's south side? Disco Demolition Night, held on July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park (Guaranteed Rate Field) in Chicago, was a promotional event organized by Chicago DJ Steve Dahl and Mike Veeck, the son of White Sox owner Bill Veeck. The event was intended to protest against disco music and offered fans a discounted admission price if they brought a disco record to be destroyed on the field between the two games of a scheduled doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. The plan was to explode the collected records in a symbolic rejection of disco culture. The situation escalated into a full-scale riot as fans stormed the field, setting off fireworks, tearing down the batting cage, and causing significant damage to the playing surface. Riot police were called in to restore order, and the second game of the doubleheader had to be canceled due to the unsafe conditions. There's a nice documentary about it that came out recently on PBS. 😊🕺💥🎶
