March 30th, Doctor’s Day

The first Doctors’ Day observance was March 28, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. This observance included mailing cards to the physicians and their wives and flowers placed on the graves of deceased doctors. On February 21, 1991, President George HW Bush, made Proclamation 6253 – National Doctors’ Day, 1991. Since that time Doctors’ Day has been celebrated on March 30th. He referenced a quote from Dr. Elmer Hess, a former president of the American Medical Association, “There is no greater reward in our profession than the knowledge that God has entrusted us with the physical care of His people. The Almighty has reserved for Himself the power to create life, but he has assigned to a few of us the responsibility of keeping in good repair the bodies in which this life is sustained.” In March 2017, Doctors’ Day became Physicians’ Week.
For years I have wanted to give tribute to the doctors that have been mentors to me and encouraged me in my training and my return to San Diego to open my private practice. As a little girl, I attended health fairs at the former Physicians and Surgeons Hospital with my mother and observed African American community physicians serving the community. The day that I walked into to the doctors’ lounge at Paradise Valley Hospital as a colleague to physicians that once were my mentors was extremely gratifying. They welcomed me with encouragement, patient referrals, and business advice. I’d like to take the time to honor physicians who poured into my hopes and dreams;

Dr. Shadrach Smith - Dean of Minority Affairs, University of Kansas School of Medicine. He supported the recruitment and retention of minority medical students. He advocated for my admission and made sure that we all received the support to matriculate and earn our medical degrees.
Dr. Valerie Montgomery-Rice - Currently the Dean of Morehouse Medical College, formerly the Chairman of the Department of reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, University of Kansas School of Medicine. She served as my mentor in medical school.
Dr. Ponjola Coney - Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Southern Illinois School of Medicine. She offered me a second-year position in residency when I was seeking a first-year residency position.
Dr. John Shockley, (memorium) -The first African American obstetrician gynecologist that I met as a teenager. His nurse practitioner, Geri Bowen, was my mentor at the time. We operated together and he taught me some techniques. He died at the age of 52, not long after I began my practice.
Dr. Joseph Frietas, retired -He practiced in the community for decades as a respected and trusted OB/Gyn. I purchased his practice two months after beginning my own practice.
Dr. Charlie Johnson -He didn’t believe I wanted to be a doctor when I was in college. He supported my decision to open my own practice and he referred his patients.
Dr. Jerome Robinson – he advised me on how to start a private practice. He inspired me to become board certified in Obesity medicine because his patients always told me he advised them to lose weight before their next visit.
Dr. Albert McClain – He advised me on becoming incorporated and obtaining a CPA to properly manage my finances and pay my taxes.
Dr. Rodney Hood and Dr. Richard Butcher(in memorium) -They both were so excited about my return to San Diego and immediately welcomed me into their Medical Group.
Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat – a Haitian American physician and women’s advocate who has a passion for giving back to Haiti with her non-profit.
Dr. Gordon Montgomery, retired – He was my eye doctor for 40 years. He diagnosed me with glaucoma at the age of 11 and told me the pictures of my eyes were being studied at UCSD school of medicine. He treated me like family and even helped me cash a student loan check when I was visiting from college.

All of these physicians had a role to play in my journey to community service as a physician. The number of physicians choosing to go into private practice after residency is less than 10%. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn and practice with these great community physicians, educators, and attendings. Happy Doctors’ Day my beloved.

Our Story

At Uniquely Fit Medical Weight Loss & Wellness Center in Chula Vista, California, board-certified obesity physician, Latisa Carson, MD, and her weight loss team love nothing more than helping patients achieve their weight goals and improving their health. Unlike other weight loss plans, the medically supervised weight loss program at Uniquely Fit Medical Weight Loss & Wellness Center uses real food and focuses on helping patients make the lifestyle changes that lead to long-term results.

After earning her medical degree at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, Dr. Carson completed her internship at LA County King-Drew Medical Center, now known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Outpatient Medical Center, in Willowbrook, California. She then went on to complete her residency training at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Dr. Carson is an OB/GYN and is board-certified in obesity medicine and is a member of the Obesity Medical Association.

The medical weight loss specialists at Uniquely Fit Medical Weight Loss & Wellness Center understand no single weight loss plan works for all and utilize many tools and techniques to help patients achieve their weight loss goals, including lifestyle coaching with her trained mentors, supplements, and appetite suppressants.
