Our Cincinnati team is busy this week with our fountain winterization service. Winterizaton protects your equipment from potential ice damage that can result in costly repairs. If there’s a potential for sustained, freezing temperatures, your floating fountain or aerator should be removed for the winter.
Service Includes:
🔹 Removal of fountain or floating aerator
🔹 Thorough cleaning of equipment
🔹 Inspection of unit and components
🔹 Reinstallation of equipment in the spring

We're excited to share a before and after from earlier this season. This 1.5 acre pond in southwest Ohio was plagued with excessive duckw**d growth. It was so out of control that the aerators were the only thing maintaining open water. When duckw**d covers the entire water surface, it limits gas transfer and can stress the fish population. Earlier this summer, our biologists successfully treated the duckw**d with an EPA registered herbicide. Frequent follow-up visits were made to measure the treatment's progress. Today, our client is enjoying cleaner, healthier pond.
With our professional management, your pond or lake can serve as a sustainable, balanced ecosystem that provides endless recreation and enjoyment. Contact us to learn more and get a free estimate: https://bit.ly/3W4mmDQ

Not only do our biologists recommend a fall stocking of fathead minnows and golden shiner minnows, fall is a great time to add species like rainbow trout, yellow perch, and walleye to your lake or pond.
These species not only thrive in cooler waters, but they also offer fantastic fall and winter fishing experiences. Plus, they make excellent table fare—perfect for your next family meal! Whether you’re looking to enjoy more fishing or fill your freezer with fresh catches, fall stocking is the way to go!

Have you ever wondered why early fall is such a popular time of the year for electrofishing? As days get shorter, fish move into shallow water to feed and put on as much body weight as possible for the cold months ahead. This behavior plays to our advantage. Our electrofishing boats are equipped with probes that dangle into the water and apply direct current. When fish are congregated in the shallows to feed, we're able to stun and collect more fish. A larger sample size provides a comprehensive understanding of the species present, their relative abundance and different age classes.
Our biologists are measuring more than just relative abundance of different fish species – they’re also measuring relative weight. What’s relative weight? Relative weight is an index fisheries biologists use to assess the condition of fish. We calculate it by dividing the weight of surveyed fish by the expected weight for a fish at the same length that has had access to an abundance of food. It sounds complicated, but it’s essentially telling our biologists if a fish is thin, fat or average for its length. A fish’s condition will change throughout the year, especially after spawning. Our biologists prefer fall for population surveys because they find the data collected provides a more accurate view of the population’s condition, because the fish have had a summer to regain the weight lost from winter and spring spawning.
Collecting the data is just the first step. Once our biologists better understand the population dynamics and the condition of the fish, they can make stocking and harvesting recommendations based on the current state and your management goals. Often a follow-up population survey will be conducted to ensure the population is on track and seeing consistent growth.

As days get shorter and temperatures begin dropping this fall, it's time to stock fathead minnows and golden shiners. To prepare for a cold winter, fish devote more time to foraging and feeding with the goal of putting on enough weight to survive the lean months. It’s important to ensure food is readily available to them. Fathead minnows and golden shiner minnows are a great option to feed largemouth bass, crappie, yellow perch and catfish. A steady food source throughout the year can improve fish health and promote steady growth rates.
Fall is also an ideal time to introduce native fish species to your lake, ensuring their better acclimation and long-term survival. During the fall, water temperatures are cooler, reducing stress on the fish and enhancing their survival rates. Our fall delivery season kicks off on Monday, September 16th.

Cattail Management Solutions: When is intervention necessary?
Small stands of cattails can be desirable – they offer habitat and shelter to birds, fish, insects and aquatic invertebrates. However, their tendency to spread and encroach along the pond edges, limiting access to the water and outcompeting native plants, means control is necessary to manage their growth.
Our biologists suggest managing cattail growth before it becomes too widespread and problematic. Not only do dense cattail stands limit recreation, but they may also negatively impact the function of retention and detention basins, resulting in flooding after rain events.
Our professional Cattail Management Program offers two separate components: Herbicidal Control & Manual Removal. Actively growing cattails are treated with a systemic herbicide to kill the extensive root system and reduce the likelihood of regrowth. Once the existing plant growth has been controlled, Jones Lake Management offers removal of dead cattails to reduce organic material and improve aesthetics.
✅ EPA registered herbicide applied to growing cattails
✅ Selective herbicide has no water-use restrictions, is safe for fish and other aquatic life, and poses little risk to non-target plants
✅ Controlled treatment area
✅ Treatment to occur in summer/fall
✅ Removal performed in fall/winter

Did you know an aerator is often the first step in improving water quality? When appropriately sized these units play an integral role in pond and lake management. By circulating the water, they can increase dissolved oxygen, vent swamp gasses, promote the break down of organic material and create a healthier environment for your fish population.
Selecting the right aerator can be a daunting task. There are many factors to consider including water depth, pond shape & size, composition of the watershed and age of the pond/lake. Pond owners must also decide how much aesthetics play a role in selecting the ideal aerator for their waterbody. With aeration solutions for every pond/lake size and budget, our team is here to help!
