The CMC Washington Program offers firsthand experiences and life-changing outcomes for 5C students who spend a semester living and working in our nation’s capital.

Built around a full-time internship in D.C., combined with a rigorous academic curriculum, the Washington Program has long offered students deep experiential learning illuminated by a liberal arts education. This fall, internships include working with U.S. representatives and senators, as well as for the Securities and Exchange Commission, NOAA’s Office of Space Commerce, and CNN.

To learn more about the program, students are invited to an information session this Thursday (Sept. 12) at 7:15 pm in Davidson Lecture Hall, located in Adams Hall. The director of the program and recent program alumni will be available to answer your questions.

The application deadline for the spring semester is this Sunday (Sept. 15).

Chumnan Jim Sangsvang '26 earns Obama Voyager Scholarship 08/28/2024

Claremont McKenna College student Chumnan Jim Sangsvang '26 has been awarded the coveted Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service, known as the Voyager Scholarship.

Created by former U.S. President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama, in partnership with Brian Chesky, Airbnb co-founder and CEO, the scholarship honors emerging leaders and their dedication to public service and a more inclusive democracy.

Sangsvang, of Burleson, Texas, is the third Claremont McKenna College student to earn the award. Last year, Ivanna Morales Mercado '25 received a 2023-2025 Voyager Scholarship, following Michael Gadinis '24, who was named to the inaugural 2022-2024 cohort.

With this award, Sangsvang, an International Relations major, plans to explore the importance of music in cultural diplomacy, and how music affects society and political change.

Cesar Vargas Nunez joins the Claremont McKenna College Government Department as an Assistant Professor of Government. His research focuses on the causes and effects of the welfare exclusion of vulnerable communities. Specifically, he focuses on understanding the consequences of healthcare exclusion and the factors that shape public attitudes toward providing welfare to undocumented immigrants. The results of his research agenda contribute to our understanding of partisan attitudes, political ideology, public health, political behavior, and inequality. His research has received support from the Fulbright Spain Commission, the National Academies of Science Engineering and Medicine (Ford Dissertation Fellowship), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Pitzer College and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University.
