It was a wonderful program last night about the hummingbirds of Ecuador at our March meeting in which everyone was invited to attend. Who knew there were so many types of hummingbirds? Not me! 132 species of Hummingbirds in a country the size of Colorado. Long long tails, long long bills, short bills, ones that cling to the flowers to feed, one that is a large as a robin, those that can survive at high elevations of the Andes, amazingly colorful iridescent feathers on some. Truly fascinating! Thank you Cyndi Routledge for sharing with us about some of these incredible life forms that exist on this earth!
We had a wonderful morning enjoying the green space in Clarksville and being with other people that enjoy seeing our beautiful local birds. You don't have to travel far and you also have time to do other things with your day when you join us for a birding walk. Come out next month on April 6 and hang out with other like minded people. We will be at a Rotary Park at 8 am next to the creek at the bottom of the hill. See you then!
You are invited to a bird walk this Saturday (March 2) at 8 am. Meet at Greenwood Cemetery. A lovely area with big trees and habitat for birds. Meet just inside the entrance at the civil war statue.

If you still have 'leftover' feeders hanging from last season, now is the time to bring them in and give them a good thorough cleaning. A white vinegar and hot water 'soak' and some srubbing should do the trick. If they're faded or cracked it's tie to replace them with one that's easier to maintain. After cleaning allow feeders to air dry and wait to re-hang until it's closer to arrival time. This map give an approximate estimation of return.
You can of course re-hang your feeders sooner in hopes of catching a glimpse of a migrating 'western winter hummingbird'! But remember you have to maintain the feeder so nectar is fresh and feeder is clean just like you do all spring and summer. However the effort just might pay big returns with a special sighting. And of course we'd LOVE to hear and see a picture if you do get that rare visitor.
You are invited to a celebration of our local birds called the Christmas Bird Count on the 16th of December in Clarksville. You can celebrate birds by listing those that you see on that day. Please message me or reply to this post and learn more.
You are invited to a Bird Walk at Clarksville Greenway this Saturday (December 2) at 8:00 am. Meet at the Pollard Road entrance to the Greenway. Please bring binoculars.
Just a seasonal reminder for those who see a hummingbird from now until March 15th...
Dear Warioto Audubon member:
Fellowship is very important. We were reminded of that by the remembrances from people about Paul Schwab at his service, how much he valued being with people.
Membership in Warioto Audubon is not about being an avid birder. It has always been about a gathering of people who love and appreciate nature, who are happiest when they are outside breathing fresh air. In fact, most of our members are nature lovers, not necessarily birders. We do have bird counts and go birding, but we do it for the chance to be outside.
Please attend the potluck this Thursday and toast Paul Schwab, Carl Gadsey and others that we have lost this year (wine and cheese provided). Non-alcoholic beverages also provided.
Please bring a dish to share. Gather at 6:00 p.m. and plan to eat at about 6:30
The entrance to the potluck is on the backside of the nature center building at the top of the hill at Rotary Park (the front doors are locked). Walking on the right side of the building on the deck gets you to the meeting room. See you there!
Please reply with any questions,
Debbie Hamilton

Our sincere condolences to Mary Schwab and family on the passing of her husband and our fellow Warioto member, Paul. We will miss his smile, his caring nature, his natural curiosity about all around him and his presence at meetings and on field trips. Paul was as friend to all he met and a true gentlemen. Till we meet again Friend, rest well.
Services for Paul will be at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman on Saturday, October 21, 2023.
