The only thing a child with T1D cannot do is produce their own insulin.
This is a simple message that underscores the reality that with proper management and care, children with Type 1 Diabetes can live full, active, and vibrant lives.
Your child has unlimited potential. They can achieve their dreams, just like anyone else. As parents, we can teach them that diabetes doesn't define them; it's just one part of their incredible journey through life.
Does your child feel like diabetes is limiting them?
Today has been a great day!
After lots of hard work, today I launched an online community for moms who have a child with Type 1 diabetes called T1D Moms CIRCLE. This is an educational platform to help moms with tools to help them overcome overwhelm and chaos. CIRCLE is a place for connection and support. I'm super proud of the result and I am excited to help T1D moms become resilient parents!
Come join us in CIRCLE!

I have always wanted my kids to live long healthy lives. This didn’t change even when T1D became our reality.
There are 3 things I constantly remind myself as I parent my T1D daughter:
1️⃣ BE READY FOR ANYTHING: Prepare for the unexpected. Knowing you've got the essentials on hand helps ease the worry and keeps your child's diabetes management on track.
2️⃣ EMBRACE IMPERFECTION: Understand that perfection is not the goal. Diabetes management is a journey with ups and downs. Embrace the learning process and celebrate progress, not perfection.
3️⃣ CRUNCH THE NUMBERS: Dive into the data. Understanding your child's blood glucose responses to different situations empowers you to make informed decisions. Look for trends to help navigate the journey effectively.
Dealing with Type 1 Diabetes means tackling challenges every day through learning and growing. What helpful reminders do you give yourself?
Type 1 diabetes in gives us the opportunity as parents to help our children build their own resilience. 💙
Some tips I have seen work include:
1️⃣ REAL TALK: Instead of asking "How was your day?", ask “What was your favorite/least favorite thing about today?". Create space for candid conversations and allow your child to express feelings.
2️⃣ TOGETHER AS ONE: Our family's a team. Involving everyone in diabetes care and support means no one's journey is solo.
3️⃣ FIND YOUR TRIBE: Joining T1D groups, like JDRF, give immediate access to people who are going through similar struggles. These support groups have given my kids (T1D and siblings) opportunities to share experiences.
4️⃣ BE THE WATCHER: Those subtle signs like a change in habits might mean something more. Trust your gut, and don't be afraid to ask a professional for help if you feel it's needed.
Share your own tips below.
Let's bust this myth:
Type 1 Diabetics can eat desserts, and cake, and candy.
However it's probably best advised that they do so in moderation!
Diabetics can live their lives, enjoy food and do not need to be singled out at social gatherings.
What common myths about diabetes are you often dispelling?

It's a shocking stat from the Lancet.
The signs of diabetes are missed all the time.
If you or your child are:
- Urinating more frequently than usual
- More thirsty than usual
- More tired than usual
- Have unexplained weightloss
- Have cuts and grazes not healing
You should speak to your doctor or medical provider.
If you've already been through the diagnosis journey, what were the first signs you spotted?

Did you know?
Type 1 Diabetes accounts for only 5-10% of diabetes cases.
Type 1 Diabetes used to be called Juvanile Diabetes as it most often diagnosed in childhood.
It is a myth that diabetes is caused by too much sugar.
Do you have any other T1D facts to share? Tell me in the comments!
That's a LOT.
Each test can be painful, inconvenient and time consuming.
But each test is so important to you or your child's immediate and long-term health.
Does that number sound right to you?
Your child might have diabetes, but diabetes does not have them.
Your child is more than their diabetes.
They are a whole person.
Your reminder for today.
If you're a parent to a teen with diabetes, listen up!
While insulin lowers blood glucose, estrogen and testosterone raise it.
Stress hormones, such as cortisol, also raise blood-glucose levels, and there can be a significant amount of stress experienced by a teen.
There are many variables at play when keeping T1D under control, especially when it comes to puberty.
Do you have any tips about managing diabetes in a teenager?
Happy Holidays!
From my family to yours, I hope you have a wonderful day.
This time of year, parents' to do lists are already miles long.
But the mental list of things to keep track of for a T1D parent is so much longer.
With daily decisions that directly impact upon the health of your child. It's no wonder it's stressful!
I'm Maureen and I help parents of kids with diabetes through 1:1 life coaching. If you think this could help you, send me a DM.
This is such a powerful way of approaching T1D.
No child chose to have diabetes.
No family chose to deal with diabetes.
No parent chose diabetes for their child.
But every child, parent and family has the choice of how they live with diabetes.
It can be so overwhelming and all-consuming. The anxieties around health and the constant need to make decisions can lead to burnout.
The way your family live with diabetes will dictate your relationship with the disease.
If you need to change your relationship with your child's T1D, life coaching could help you.

There is so much misinformation about T1D!
Have you heard any of these diabetes myths?
What other common 'facts' about diabetes do you have to dispel? Tell me in the comments.
Learning to parent a child with T1D is a journey. And not an easy journey.
Not only do you need to parent while managing a life-changing medical condition.
You now also need to educate your child's teachers and care givers about diabetes.
Advocating for your child is so important, but also not easy.
Does this resonate with you?

At the time it was a huge shock.
The huge range of emotions, worries, concerns and anxieties that happen with a life-changing diagnosis.
What is your child's diagnosis story? I would love for you to share it.
Today is the last day of National Diabetes Awareness Month, so I'm spreading the word about the key symptoms of T1D.
If you already have a child in your family with diabetes, you will be well aware of these signs.
But do you think beyond your closest family, that your wider network are?
The patent for insulin was sold for $1 so it would be available to all.
Unfortunately the price has crept up and up, and it's now the 6th most expensive liquid in the world.
What liquids are more expensive? Chanel No. 5, snake venom and horseshoe crab blood are a few.
But insulin is so vital to the people and the families who rely on it.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating.
What are you thankful for today?
Diabetes is physically hard. From injections to pumps to blood tests.
But it's hard emotionally. It's a rollercoaster from day to day.
It's a weight on your shoulders. A constant worry for your T1D child.
Having coping mechanisms is vital.
What's the hardest part of diabetes for you?
As a parent of a child with a longlong condition, being resilient is so tough, yet so important.
As well as offering 1:1 coaching, did you know I have written a book?
My book, Reclaiming Life, is a guide for parents of chronically ill children, including T1D.
