Can’t make it in person? Watch the live stream on the Morgan's Facebook! Learn more about Danqi's work by visiting her website www.danqicai.com or by following her Instagram .
Born and raised in China, Danqi [dan-CHI] immigrated to the US as an adult, spending the last ten years adapting to a different culture, language, and way of thinking. This adaptation reveals to her that the framework of meaning she took to be absolute was, in fact, relational. In other words, she inherited, rather than chose, values embedded in her upbringing. Danqi’s multimedia, multilayered, and multidimensional work reminds the viewer: immigrant or not, everyone inherited meanings from their early experiences. Some values one may now endeavor to unlearn. She draws from didactic materials such as folktales, textbooks, and languages to layer 4D processes atop multi-laminated 2D substrates. The results are multidimensional pieces that conceal and reveal information depending on the viewer’s physical point of view.

"Liminal Spaces: Art and the Environment" is a group exhibition featuring local and national artists who are using book, paper and print to explore the relationship between themselves and the environment. Liminal space refers to an uncertain transitional period. When artists look at the boundaries between art and environment, it becomes uncertain and fuzzy. Inspired by the world around them, these artists reflect on the social, political and physical effects humankind has on the environment.

🔸Artist Statement: "My current body of work consists of a series of visual essays about my battle with nonbinary q***rness. My self-discovery of q***rness has come through a lot of internal struggle and argument. I found myself at a crossroads, an x/y axis if you will. On the x axis I have gay/straight, on the y male/ female. As things stand, I’ve sat myself down somewhere in the middle. This is the point from which I investigate and I argue with myself. The argument? Am I, or am I not a liar? As the topic is multifaceted, it requires a multi-pronged approach. Each piece in this series seeks to approach this debate from a different angle in order to come to a conclusion which takes into account; history, memory, risk, deception and feeling.
Symbolism is and continues to be important to the q***r community. Often double coded, it allowed and continues to allow members of the community to communicate to the “in'' crowd while also eluding would be persecutors. This is apparent throughout q***r art history. LGBTQ+ persons have consistently used symbology within “acceptable” works to talk about their inner feeling or socially “unacceptable” q***rness. Many of these historical q***r symbols appear within my work and are then explained and recognized within the “Index”. I seek to recognize and continue this visual q***r history."

🔸Artist Statement: "Only We is a COVID-19 memorial utilizing installation-based visual design to provide a public space for reflection, healing, and growth supporting Scott County’s community and those who have been impacted by the pandemic. The project’s goal is to create a public artwork that acknowledges collective, non-partisan losses. This is accomplished through the creation of a large-scale public artwork of individually drawn and laser-cut acrylic characters representing each person who died due to COVID-19 or complications from the virus in Scott county. As the black-coated figures create a murmuration of loss, the negative space is stark white, forcing us to acknowledge the number and movement of this halting occurrence in all our lives, still present today. The installation ends in red-colored cut letters forming text from a local poet focusing on the love we have held, the memories we hold, and the hope we continue to have. Unlike many memorials, this is ongoing and will be updated as Scott County numbers change over the coming months and years. As of this proposal, the county has 439 confirmed deaths, but a new body will be hand drawn, laser cut, and placed alongside the current artwork as that number increases, reminding us of the human toll COVID presents, and presenting grace through the shared history and unification loss/trauma often bring. In addition to the public art piece, a series of prints, paper installations, and non-editioned artist’s books disseminate the idea that this is not just a single county. It’s every county in the country. It’s every community in a continent. It’s all of the continents. We collectively experienced loss. The best autobiography is the one that everyone relates to."
🔸Artist Bio: Joseph Lappie is the chair and a full professor of the Art + Design department at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa and teaches bookbinding, papermaking, printmaking, & drawing. He developed and continues to grow a print & book concentration. Joseph works heavily in the Quad Cities to provide free or near-free book, paper, and print demonstrations for area k-12 schools, non-profit organizations, and on the sidewalks of the community. Receiving his M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Book & Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago, Joseph shows his installation print work and artist’s books throughout the country. He has shown in Atlanta, Chicago, Iowa City, London, New York, Portland, and Seoul. His book work is collected in multiple collections including Yale Arts Library, SAIC, Ringling College of Art & Design, and the Jaffe Book Arts Collection.
