It’s a girl!

It’s a girl!

The newest addition to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s western lowland gorilla family was born on June 29, and the Animal Care and Conservation Medicine teams have confirmed that the baby is female. Her name will be announced at a later date.

Baby girl and mom are doing well! Sue, the baby’s mother, keeps the baby close and is taking great care of her. The team reports that she is a great mom and that the rest of the troop continues to be interested in the newest addition.

The baby is the 35th gorilla to be born at the Columbus Zoo since 1956 when Colo, the first gorilla to be born in professional care, entered the world. You can see Sue and baby in either the indoor or outdoor gorilla habitat; however, they have unlimited access to behind-the-scenes locations to rest and bond. Plan your visit to meet them and learn more about the many ways that the Columbus Zoo helps to conserve this critically endangered species! https://www.columbuszoo.org/congo-expedition

Heartbreaking news from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park today on the passing of legendary silverback Winston. Beloved by gorillas, keepers, and visitors, Winston’s 52 year legacy will be continued by generations of related gorillas around the country.

Nest in peace, Winston.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance family is heartbroken to share the passing of Winston, the 52-year-old western lowland gorilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

This gentle giant will be remembered for his quiet strength, easygoing nature, and heart of gold. Winston served as the protector of his family and was recognized as one of the oldest silverbacks in the world.

Wildlife care teams monitoring Winston's heart noticed signs of decline in recent years, and he had been receiving medical treatments for several age-related conditions, including heart disease, degenerative joint disease, and kidney disease.

Winston’s wildlife care specialists described him as representing “the best of us,” and his contributions to gorilla conservation will continue to improve the lives of great apes around the world for generations to come. We invite you to share your memories and condolences with all who are feeling this loss. Thank you for your continued support.

He is perfect. 👑

And at three years old, Pablo is every bit a rascal, wrestling with his sisters and following Little Joe around. But you can still catch those tender moments with his mom, when he climbs into her lap for a snuggle.

Spend some quality face time with the family at Gorilla Grove this summer.
