In recognition of World AIDS Day, can you commit to combating the misinformation about HIV and AIDS, starting with knowing your own status?
Five things you may not know about HIV:
1. HIV does not mean AIDS!
If treatment begins before the immune system is too compromised, contracting AIDS is highly unlikely.
2. HIV is not a death sentence!
While there is no cure for HIV, it is a manageable health condition with the proper medication. People living with HIV can live long, full lives.
3. HIV does not discriminate!
Anyone who has unprotected s*xual contact is at risk for contracting HIV and other STIs. Once known as a āgay-related immune disease,ā the CDC reports that 20% of new HIV exposures are among heteros*xual men and women.
4. You can have HIV and not even know!
Early symptoms can be confused with the flu or stress, but you can still pass on the virus to others. The only sure way to know your status is to be tested for both HIV-1 and HIV-2.
5. HIV is 100% preventable!
Undetectable = Untransmittable.
Bonus fact: the laws in Ohio concerning HIV disclosure are outdated and need to be changed.

TW/CW: self-harm, su***de
Also known as āSurvivor Day,ā International Survivors of Su***de Loss Day began in 1999 as a day each year when those affected by the self-inflicted death of a loved one could join together for healing and support. The American Foundation for Su***de Prevention reported in 2016 that su***de was the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., and unfortunately, it has remained on the top 10 list through today for people ages 10-64. Some groups have higher su***de rates than others, but suicidal thoughts can affect any person at any time.
Often, there are no signs that someone is struggling. But here are some common tips to potentially help a loved one:
1) Donāt be afraid to talk about mental health: Many people might be reluctant to inquire whether a friend or family member is having thoughts of self-harm. But research shows that asking such questions decreases, rather than increases that risk.
2) Help keep them safe: Reducing the personās access to lethal means can go a long way to preventing a tragedy.
3) Stay in touch: Suicidal thoughts thrive in isolation ā just being there for your loved one can help protect against su***de.
4) Encourage them to reach out for help: gently suggest to your loved one to consider therapy or attending a support group.
5) Follow up. After connecting the person in crisis with the support system they need, donāt stop reaching out and checking in. Maintaining a presence in their life can reduce your loved oneās odds of su***de.
People in crisis who called crisis hotlines or warmlines were more likely to experience a lessening of depression and feel less helpless and more hopeful by the end of the call.

According to the United Nations, the fight against intolerance requires five (5) different factors:
ā¢ Law: States and governments shoud act to implement human rights laws.
ā¢ Education: Intolerance is frequently caused by ignorance and fear, and it can also be related to an extreme sense of self-worth and pride.
ā¢ Access to information: Governing bodies should create policies that protect and encourage press freedom, so that it will allow people to distinguish between facts and opinions.
ā¢ Individual awareness: It is important that each individual realizes and is aware of the relation between their actions and the consequences.
ā¢ Local solution: Even if intolerance is a global problem because of its prevalence, it is important to know and to remember that local and individual actions can play a key role in order to tackle this important issue. In fact, each individual can participate and has the power to act.
āTolerance is also the foundation of democracy and human rights.ā - UNESCO, 2015

TransOhio started our Trans Awareness Week by monitoring and deleting over 250 violent, transphobic hate comments and messages, most of which were directed at children and were concentrated on a post honoring U.S. veterans.
As the wave of anti-trans, anti-liberty legislation continues to threaten the lives and existing freedoms of trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and inters*x folks in Ohio (and other states), itās important to remember that the majority of the general population does not hold such bigoted beliefs. In fact, most of offenders in our posts have newly-created profiles with no friends.
You can observe Trans Awareness Week by pushing back against anti-trans sentiments wherever you see or hear it. This week, the Ohio legislature is moving forward with no less than four (4) bills that will directly negatively impact trans youth. Did you know that the estimated number of inters*x infants who receive nonconsentual, medically-unnecessary surgery to ānormalizeā ge***al appearance is 2 in 1,000 births?
āThough the discrimination that inters*x individuals and transgender individuals face stems from the same social, medical, and political forces that want to enforce binary notions of biologically based s*xual difference, our communities are often pitted against each other. This is because inters*x individuals have to fight to be free from nonconsensual, medically unnecessary surgery, while trans individuals are forced to fight to gain access to medically necessary health care, including some of the same surgical procedures that are performed nonconsensually on inters*x infants. But our communities ā at times overlapping ā are natural allies in the fight against medical and state control over the autonomy and health needs of our bodies.ā
