Four years ago today I announced the launch of Tailwinds Therapy.

What a whirlwind it has been since then!

It blows my mind to realize Tailwinds Therapy has impacted nearly 200 individual lives with the therapy services that we offer in-office, online, and in partnership with horses.

We have built lasting relationships with so many wonderful clients and it means the world to have those who have benefited from our services refer their friends and family back to us.

I am so grateful for all that our team has worked toward, but this journey has been anything but a smooth ride.

I still often get frustrated with the business and the rush of wanting everything to move faster than it does, but I’m reminded that in all work, things have a way of working out in their own time.

Our job is to keep after our dreams, and as my professor, Dr. Ruth Shaeffer, used to say, “Just trust the process.”

Meet Caitlin Lowry 02/07/2023

I recently had the pleasure of being invited to interview with about my business and journey.

Sharing the origin of how this all got started was a powerful reminder of how important this work is to me.

There are days where being a therapist is just plain hard, and being one who incorporates horses into the healing process seems even harder. At the end of the day though, we are changing lives. We are helping people heal and it is a mission of mine to continue to help others move forward.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my story.

Meet Caitlin Lowry Alright - so today we've got the honor of introducing you to Caitlin Lowry. We think you'll enjoy our conversation, we've shared it below. Alright, Caitlin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the traje...

Yes!

I share with parents all the time that if your child is seeking your attention, they are asking to feel connection!

Working with children and teens throughout the last ten years has taught me that labeling behaviors as “attention seeking” or “cries for help” are often met with frustration and attempts to just stop the behavior.

There is often a perception that the behaviors are intentional and even “manipulative.” Meanwhile, nine times out of ten, the child or teen are trying to get another need met.

Parents, teachers, and caregivers often attempt to ignore or punish behaviors to make them go away. While there is a time and place for appropriate discipline, ignoring the underlying need to connect usually causes behaviors to increase instead of decrease. The frustration builds and the cycle continues.

Changing the way you look at the behavior changes the way to respond.

Shifting the interactions into ones that build a sense of safety and connection typically helps the child or teen become more regulated; as a result, their symptoms decrease.

Here are some simple ways to connect when your child or teen are “connection seeking”:

- Validate their feelings with empathetic responses such as, “I can see what a hard time you are having, I’m here with you to help.”
- Play! Then play some more.
- Limit distractions during interactions and spend one on one time whenever possible.
- Do Time-ins Vs. Time-outs where you and your child do something soothing together when they are needing to calm down or be redirected.
- Find activities where you and your child or teen can learn a new skill together and bond over shared experiences.

THIS.👏🤩

Dr. Kyle Weir posted this in another therapist group I am in and I wanted to share here in case anyone could benefit.

I graduated from the MFT program at Fresno State in 2012 and I gained my earliest hours at Fresno Family Counseling Center.

The students and supervisors are amazing and this is a great opportunity to be part of a study for his new couples therapy model and to get access to free or deeply reduced rate ($15/session) services!

I wrapped up my Level 1 training for Natural Lifemanship at the end of November and I’m excited to enroll in the next step toward full certification this spring!

Natural Lifemanship is a program that offers training for equine assisted service providers that focuses on relationships and healthy attachment.

I’ve been introduced to multiple equine assisted psychotherapy trainings over my career.

I started with EAGALA in 2018, and I’m still actively certified, but it has been amazing to explore other approaches to equine assisted services.

I’ve truly enjoyed the depth of this training and all the program has to offer.

Like most therapists, I enjoy the growth and opportunities that continued education provides. I think it is important as a provider to have training in multiple modalities to be able to integrate different approaches based on individual client needs.

Natural Lifemanship’s trauma-informed approach mirrors much of the work my equine specialist and I have already been doing for the last few years.

I’m excited for this year ahead and incorporating even more Natural Lifemanship principles into the equine work we provide.

As a reminder, you can learn more about our equine assisted services by clicking the link in the bio and scrolling to the page for “Take The Reins” on our website.

Sometimes it’s just below the surface. The hurt. The desperation. The defeat.

A smile can hide it all too easily 💔

I was so sad with the news of this tragic loss. Sometimes we just don’t know until it’s too late, so be kind, ask how your friends and family are, and be there.

If you or a loved one are having thoughts of harming yourself, call 9-8-8 or visit a local hospital. You are loved and needed.

I’m still processing.

I did not know tWitch, yet his passing lingers for me. I think what has me trippin is he was always smiling so big, so full of life….creating a Tik Tok dance video just a few days ago!

And it scares me….scares and confuses me to be starkly reminded that someone can smile all the way to the darkest place possible.

As Shaun King said in his post, we need to throw away the stereotypes of what someone who is depressed or struggling or even suicidal looks and acts like. They can be sharp, fashionable, fly, with a million dollar smile. ⁣

And we should operate under the assumption that EVERYBODY around us is struggling with SOMETHING. ⁣

“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” — Kurt Vonnegut

Today was a special one ❤️

When I started my practice in 2019, I was working full-time for another practice while building Tailwinds Therapy on the side as a solo-entrepreneur.

I was passionate about creating a business that would offer our community a different way of working with horses to promote healing, but I needed support.

I connected with several amazing therapists, horsewomen, and practice owners along the way, and I’m so grateful for the friendships we’ve created.

Even though I started as a solo practice, I really wanted a holiday party to celebrate the end of the year. Life has just had other plans until now.

In 2019, I celebrated with the staff and management at California Psychological Institute after my last day on 12/6/19. They generously hosted a goodbye lunch and I was so thankful to have a day to celebrate the years we had worked together.

2020, brought tremendous growth and change, but there wasn’t really a point trying to host a Christmas party considering all the mess of the pandemic— so, I skipped it.

Last year I was determined to have a party, but with staffing changes just before the holidays and then a terrible case of food poisoning, I opted to cancel it again.

So this year, in 2022, I was determined to carve out some time to celebrate! And even though our schedules made it tough to find a time that would work for us all, we made it happen!

Our team is small and just in the earliest stages of growth, but it meant so much to gather today with these wonderful ladies over lunch.

Megan, Yani, and I were thankful to have Amber from Elysium Therapeutic Horsemanship be able to join us as well.

We had a wonderful lunch and even ran into a previous colleague/friend of mine from CPI!

It felt full circle and while it was just a small little gathering of ladies over lunch, it meant so much to me.

I truly appreciate each one of these women and I’m excited for the year ahead as we continue moving forward!

Happy Holidays from the Tailwinds Therapy team!

These big eyes greet you on our website’s homepage. They belong to our sweet old man, Dunny, who we sadly said goodbye to in October 2021.

People who knew him would say he had a kind eye, but what does that really mean?

The expressions in horses’ eyes communicate a tremendous amount of information, much like human eyes. Kind eyes are often soft and relaxed and identify a horse who enjoys engaging with people.

Beyond kindness, horses’ eyes can show fear, anger, relaxation, pain, concern, curiosity, and so much more.

In our Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) sessions, the horses are not specially trained to perform any special skills. Instead, we focus on allowing space for them to simply “be a horse” and respond to clients as a horse naturally does.

Sessions are provided by a licensed mental health professional partnered with a horse professional. The therapeutic interventions target specific treatment goals and are not focused around teaching horsemanship skills, riding, or other traditional horse-training methods.

Instead, sessions focus on supporting clients in learning more about their own experiences through their interactions with the horses to aid in reducing the client’s mental health symptoms.

We guide our clients through targeted interventions and activities that increase feelings of connection, relaxation, and awareness of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations as they interact with the horses.

Our treatment team is specially trained to watch for changes in the horse’s expressions and movements. They guide clients in noticing changes in the horses’ expressions and behaviors while also bringing awareness to the client of their own internal experiences during the sessions.

When appropriate, the treatment team will also translate the horses’ non-verbal communication back to clients to help support the clients in understanding how the horse is responding throughout the session.

This process is part of what offers clients with immediate feedback during sessions and allows for a depth of experience that is often difficult to reach in traditional talk-therapy models.

What’s in the logo?

When I started brainstorming ideas for my practice in 2018, finding the right name was important to me.

I like to think I’m pretty creative, and so I toyed with so many “horsey” phrases and played with how to combine horses and mental health to create a name for the business. It seemed I’d figure one out, only to search it and see it had already been done.

For weeks I was stuck without a name and while I was frustrated, I kept trusting it would come to me.

Then, one day, I was driving down a hill with turns that wind back and forth and I found myself thinking of how a tailwind helps move us along to our destination.

I can still feel the moment that spark ignited and Tailwinds Therapy was born.

The motto, “Helping you move forward” rang in my mind and I thought of how we would be working together to help people move forward through their struggles and pain.

I began to doodle ideas for my logo art and I settled on a drawing I made of a horse and human together to demonstrate the connection we share in our experiences.

I have always found greens and blues to be soothing and I chose eucalyptus to encircle the logo as symbolism of the holistic approach to healing in combination with a sense of relaxation.

These colors permeate our office and branding to create spaces that feel both welcoming and restorative.

Now, over four years later, I still cherish the meaning behind what started as just a thought and now has become our logo, our brand.

About Tailwinds Therapy

Tailwinds Therapy offers a dynamic approach to helping individuals, couples, and families overcome their struggles through providing services that include both traditional in-office therapy sessions as well as a more hands-on approach to therapy through providing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy services.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) combines certified mental health treatment in partnership with horses to provide an alternative to traditional talk therapy. This service is different than therapeutic riding as it is provided using ground-based therapy interventions that are focused on reducing mental heath symptoms such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, PTSD, and difficulty during life changes.

Tailwinds Therapy was started by Caitlin Lowry in 2019. Caitlin is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with years of experience treating trauma-related mental health issues throughout Fresno County. Caitlin maintains an active certification through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) to provide EAP services and is committed to continued education and learning to continue the development of this field. All EAP sessions also include a qualified equine specialist in additional to the therapist as part of the treatment team.

Services are available for individuals, couples, families, and groups (based on availability). Current weekday openings are available as of Feb 17, 2020. Call 387-4367 or visit www.tailwindstherapy.com to learn more!
