The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Mu***os, is a celebration of deceased loved ones that involves many symbols and traditions:
Altars: Also known as ofrendas, these are built in homes or communities to honor the dead. They typically include photos, mementos, candles, marigolds, and the deceased's favorite foods and drinks.
Papel picado: Traditional paper banners that represent wind and let loved ones know when spirits have arrived
Candles: Represent light, faith, and hope. Candles are often placed in a cross shape to represent the cardinal directions and help guide spirits to the altar
Food: Represents earth and nourishment for the soul. Common foods include fruit, mole, chocolate, and atole.
Water: Placed in a pitcher to quench the spirits' thirst
Salt: Set out in a cross shape to purify souls and quench their thirst
Bread: Represents the food needed for survival and is an offering to the deceased
Color: Different colors of paper have different meanings, such as orange for mourning, purple for the Catholic religion, red for warriors and women who died giving birth, green for the young, yellow for the elderly, white for children, and black for the underworld
Blue: Represents water and is often used to provide water to thirsty souls
Skulls: A popular symbol of the Day of the Dead, often made out of sugar and representing the cyclical nature of life

FACT: Without Measure A, CUSD is out of money for deferred maintenance, modernization projects and new construction. Many of our schools were built 60+ years ago, and though carefully tended to look their best, would begin to show the effect of aging roofs, plumbing and electrical systems.
Lack of funds also means projects could not happen to improve safety and technology at all campuses nor complete construction of Clovis South High, leaving our secondary students in overcrowded environments or facing boundary changes.

Clovis Unified's Parent Academy will hold its next Parent Night from 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 7, with parents hearing from “Mr. Peace,” a nationally recognized youth motivational speaker who discusses bullying prevention, character education and more.
This event will be held at the district’s Professional Learning Center (362 N. Clovis Ave., Suite 101, Clovis). Dinner and childcare are available and will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the presentation starting at 6 p.m.

ESL students from the Clovis Adult had the opportunity to visit the Fresno State Planetarium for the first time, and it was a truly remarkable experience. The students were filled with excitement and curiosity as they entered the dome-shaped theater, eager to explore the wonders of the night sky. As the lights dimmed and the stars began to shine, the students were mesmerized by the vivid projections that danced across the ceiling, transporting them to distant galaxies and celestial phenomena. The knowledgeable staff guided the students through the various exhibits, sharing fascinating insights about the solar system, the life cycle of stars, and the mysteries of the universe. By the end of the field trip, the students emerged with a deeper appreciation for the vastness of the cosmos and a renewed sense of wonder at the natural world around them.
