Many people get Chalazions and Styes mixed up and believe they are one in the same. So what is the difference between the two? A Chalazion is an inflammation of a meibomian gland in the eyelid, often resulting in a small cyst-like bump on the lid. On the other hand, a Stye is an infection involving the glands of the edge of the eyelid. Styes tend to be more tender than Chalazions and can form what is similar to a pimple on the eyelid. Both should gradual dissipate on their own, but using warm compresses and keeping the area sterile is important to aid in the healing process. A lot of our patients ask what the medical names for certain eye conditions are so we've decided to share some eye vocab with you! We're starting with PRESBYOPIA. Everyone will eventually develop this condition and many of you may have already developed it. In Latin, this means "old age condition." It is farsightedness caused by loss of elasticity and gradual thickening of the lens of the eye. This is the reason why many people hit age 40 and find that they need readers all of a sudden. This is part of the natural aging process so there's nothing you can do to avoid it, but keeping up with your yearly eye exams and stocking up on cheaters will help!
