Together, With Pride 08/28/2024

"From a small seed, a small group with a vision, a few people gathered to dream together, amazing things have been born. Whenever I get discouraged about the state of the world or feel like we are moving backwards, whenever I feel uncertain that I can make a difference, I try to remember those that went before me, and those right now around me, that are building and working and dreaming for a better world."

Together, With Pride “Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce…seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”–Jeremiah 29:5-7 This past Saturday, I was privileged to join with several...

A Twenty-First Century Letter from the Prodigal’s Parent 08/21/2024

"By consequence, at the core of our being, each of us yearns for belonging. For me, that yearning is fulfilled in knowing that no matter where I am, what’s happening around me, and even whether I am surrounded by people or completely isolated, I belong to your mom and to both of you, and you belong to me. It’s not a matter of property rights or something in a capitalist mindset. It’s a matter of security and, ironically, of liberation. Because I belong, I am free to be."

A Twenty-First Century Letter from the Prodigal’s Parent The following is from a letter I wrote to our children, Ruthie (16) and Mac (19), during my recent sabbatical. Note: I recognize that some interpretations of the Parable of the Prodigal Son cast the father in the story as God. Regardless, it is not my intent to assume that impossible role in framing...

Chasing the Sunrise 08/14/2024

"As we start to climb, we catch our breath and chat about theology, justice, books, and tattoos until one of us stops the other in complete wonder at what the mountain has for us today. A skunk runs past a tree, a blooming cactus blushes behind a rock, a snake lowers its head to blend in, and a walking stick steps leisurely by. We talk, we listen, we stop, we notice, until we reach the peak and say nothing for a little while. The sun is awake, and she looks so beautiful stretching her arms out over the mountains where she had been resting not long before. Sometimes it just feels like God is showing off, if only we take the time to notice."

Read more of Pastor Brooke's reflection in today's Midweek Message "Chasing the Sunrise"

Chasing the Sunrise I like to say that the sun and I share similar sleep schedules, meaning that if she’s not up, then neither am I. But there are exceptions to this pattern, and sometimes I get up before she does. This is always the case when I venture out to West Texas with my family each summer for the annual Bloy...

Deliberation in Our Sanctification 08/07/2024

"And while the gift of God’s powerful Spirit is freely given to each of us, one thing I was reminded of during my recent sabbatical is that nothing changes without deliberation. We’ve got to do the daily work in relationship with the Holy Spirit to spur along the process of gradual change in our lives that makes the values of faith shine brighter and brighter from the one, unmistakable life we’ve been given."
