Did you know we have a piece of wreckage from the World Trade Center right here on campus?

The plaque next to the memorial reads:

"This display represents a community-wide project for the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. It is designed to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001, and impart to the viewer the far-reaching impact of those events. This impact, while undoubtedly felt most strongly in the United States, has had truly global repercussions and has permanently altered the world.

Resting in the center of the globe is a steel plate salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. This surviving remnant serves as a somber reminder of the physical and emotional devastation caused by the events of that day. At the same time, its survival and presence at this site are a direct expression of the will of the American people to persevere unswervingly in overcoming all adversity.

As you reflect on this display, you will notice that the remnant points toward Cheyenne Mountain in the distance, the location of the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. This military base and four other Colorado Springs Military bases have similar displays to commemorate the events of September 11 and to inspire all those who work to protect and advance the good of our country. The designers of this display and of the Cheyenne Mountain display collaborated with the Mechanical Engineering Department and other members of the UCCS community in its creation. Such cooperation is an example of the unified spirit of the Colorado Springs community and its efforts to benefit our country and the world."

May we never forget.
