At Commencement his year, we were pleased to honor three long-time Heathwood faculty members with the Earl H. Devanny Memorial Award. Named after Heathwood's Head of school from 1972 to 1977, the award recognizes those who have been significant in the development of the School and who reflect values and principles upon which Heathwood Hall was founded. This year's recipients are Director of Information Services John Caballero, Upper School History teacher Gigi Dawson, and Lower School PE teacher and coach Lynn Humphrey.
Please join us in congratulating these outstanding Highlanders for their service and dedication!

This , we head to Peru to explore the Amazon river and rainforest. This group of adventurous Highlanders spent an action packed week in the jungle, experiencing the ecology and culture of one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. Students learned about ongoing educational initiatives and sustainability development projects at the Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies. They also got an close up look at indigenous culture, including handicrafts, ceremonial dances, and the use of medicinal plants and tools like machetes and blow darts. Trip highlights include fishing for piranhas on the Amazon river (later enjoying them for dinner), snuggling sloths, exploring the rainforest tree canopy, and releasing butterflies. Our Highlander also had the opportunity to give back through the Adopt-A-School program, where the volunteered at a school in a remote Amazon village. Did you know today (June 11th) is the first ever International Day of Play? Heathwood recognizes that playing is integral to healthy childhood development, which is why our Highlander Camps reserve time for unstructured play in their daily camp schedule. By providing our campers with a safe, supervised, stimulating environment, we give them space to grow their imaginations, build friendships, and burn off energy!
Chef Arthur and the Dining Commons team wish all our Highlanders a safe and happy summer!

Day 1️⃣ was so much fun! ☀️ From Highlander Camp to Harry Potter, Chess to Cookie Decorating, Tennis, Art, Baseball, and so much more! Heathwood Summer Programs is off to a super start. It's going to be a GREAT week!
We enjoyed catching up with our Highlanders at Heathwood Day! Families had the chance to chat with incoming EC/LS Head Megan Dhar, guest reader for Saturday's story time. The bookstore was packed with students, faculty, and families for the afternoon art exhibit by Dasha Syromiatnykova '24, whose painting depict her experience in Ukraine. Summer reading titles, the 2024 edition of the Palette, Heathwood's literary magazine, as well as At Loggerheads, a novel by Heathwood alumna Kristen Ness, are all available at All Good Books - our favorite Five Points bookstore!
☀️It's opening day! Heathwood Summer Programs is excited to welcome new and returning campers for week one of the 2024 session. It's going to be a GREAT summer! ☀️

Heathwood is blessed to have dedicated parents who support the school in many ways. At baccalaureate, we recognized four senior parents who have played an essential role over the years through volunteerism, planning, time, and energy with the Hickman Award.
Established in 2008 to recognize parental service to the school, the Hickman Award is named in honor of Steve Hickman, Heathwood Hall’s seventh Head of School (1999 to 2007) and his wife, Mary, who gave tirelessly to our school community.
Congratulations to our 2024 recipients, Edgar Morris '89, Virginia Cooper, Catherine Taylor, and Dale Roberts '90.
On Wednesdays this summer, we'll be taking a look at some of the amazing Winterim opportunities our Highlanders experienced in the spring. We're kicking off the series with Winterim Patagonia. PEAK Director Stan Wood, Kelly Turbeville '13, and twelve students travelled to South America for a week full of hiking, camping, and exploring glaciers. Located along the southern coast of Argentina and Chile, Patagonia is known for its vast landscapes, expansive grasslands, and breathtaking views. After landing in Buenos Aires, our adventure seekers travelled to Perito Moreno, and incredible 18,000 year old glacier and one of the few in the world that continues to advance! Next stop, Chalten where they kayaked on Lago Viedna, a lake formed by melting glacial ice. Then it was on to hiking and camping on Mount Fitz Roy, one of the prominent peaks featured in the Patagonia clothing logo. Enjoying local culture and cuisine along the way, these Heathwood students absorbed a tremendous amount of knowledge in one week and we are confident this is an experience they will never forget!
It's National Running Day and we wanted to give a special shout out to Heathwood's award winning running programs. 🏆 Did you know Heathwood's girls and boys cross country teams BOTH hold state championship titles for 2024? PLUS our girls track and field team also holds the 2024 state championship title (2 years running) and the boys team was the 2024 runner up.
The love for running starts early at Heathwood Hall, so it's no surprise that Run Like A Highlander ranks as one of our most popular after school clubs for students in grades K-4.
Cheers to a superb school year! Heathwood’s faculty and staff gathered for a fun evening to celebrate the end of another remarkable academic year. We also took time to recognize Lynn Humphrey, Gigi Dawson, and John Caballero for their dedication and commitment to Heathwood. All have spent “decades” at “the Hall”, touching lives of countless Highlanders, and will either be retiring or pursuing new adventures. Each was presented with a unique painting of campus as a memento of thanks.
To all of our outstanding team members- thank you for another incredible year. We hope your summer is fabulous and look forward to seeing you for 2024-2025!

Their final evening on campus as Heathwood students. Thursday we celebrated the Class of 2024 with two special traditions. Heathwood Chaplain Rev. Jeri-Katherine Sipes delivered the homily of our Baccalaureate service. After a reading from the book of Matthew (5:13-16), she reminded the graduates of the importance of being "salt and light" in the world. Students, faculty, and families later enjoyed the History of the Class, a collection of anecdotes and pictures lovingly collected from current and former teachers, coaches, staff, students, and parents. This heartwarming presentation chronicled the adventures of the Class of 2024- from Early Childhood through Upper School- with unique stories about each student. On Friday, we'll celebrate Commencement at Trinity Cathedral, and the next time these Highlanders return to South Beltline, it will be as alumni. 💙💚
Look out Upper School, here they come! Baccalaureate services were held for the Class of 2028 Wednesday, marking the end of Middle School for this outstanding group of Highlanders. We couldn't post all the pictures here, but there are plenty! Please visit https://ow.ly/RzLs50S236J for the complete album💙💚
Our finial 𝙎𝙀𝙉𝙄𝙊𝙍 𝙎𝙋𝙊𝙏𝙇𝙄𝙂𝙃𝙏 is on Sophie Hughes who will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next Fall.
⌛ How long have you been at Heathwood?
I have been at Heathwood since kindergarten.
💭 What is your favorite Heathwood memory?
My favorite Heathwood memories have been made on Winterim trips! I love traveling and Winterim offers such a fun experience of getting to explore new places while also bonding with my friends and teachers. From scuba diving with Ms. Masters, to snowshoeing in Annecy with Madame Keller, and even hiking up a volcano in Martinique, each trip has been such a unique experience.
✏️ What is/was your favorite class and why?
I've had so many great classes, but my favorite have been my classes with Mr. Blackstone, Madame Keller, and Dr. Plowden. Each of these teachers are so amazing and have made learning so much more fun.
⭐ What advice would you give a Freshman beginning their Heathwood Upper School journey?
The best advice I could give to a student starting high school at Heathwood is to take full advantage of everything Heathwood has to offer. There's such a great group of teachers at Heathwood, each of which wants to see you do your absolute best and are more than willing to help you achieve your goals. Take advantage of this.
Congratulations Sophie !
We are proud of you! 💚 💙
In today’s 𝙎𝙀𝙉𝙄𝙊𝙍 𝙎𝙋𝙊𝙏𝙇𝙄𝙂𝙃𝙏, Jasmine Trapp who will be attending the University of North Carolina in Charlotte next Fall.
⌛ How long have you been at Heathwood?
I have been a student at Heathwood Hall for four years, starting in the 9th grade.
💭 What is your favorite Heathwood memory?
During the beginning senior year, our class had the opportunity to travel to Charleston to volunteer with Homeworks. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience, as it allowed us to bond with our classmates outside of the school and engage with teachers in a different setting. The chance to work with Homeworks provided a valuable perspective on community service and deepened our connections with both peers and educators.
✏️ What is/was your favorite class and why?
My favorite was Honors Biology 2. I loved this class because it was incredibly engaging and involved a lot of hands-on experimenting. Our teacher has a great sense of humor and was always there to listen to all of us.
3️⃣ My three favorite Heathwood experiences were:
Always prioritize placing your faith in God before anything else. Embrace an open-minded approach, explore various clubs, and welcome change into your life. Trust the transition from middle and high school is different. However, These four quick high school years will shape your future, so start crafting it purposefully. Remember to have fun and relish every moment. Consider getting involved in sports, even if you lack interest. It will be one of the most rewarding decisions you'll ever make.
Congratulations Jasmine! We are proud of you! 💚 💙
Next stop, Kindergarten! With big smiles, joyful hearts, and possibly a few tears, Heathwood's EC4 families gathered Wednesday to celebrate the Class of 2037's move from Early Childhood to Lower School. Students, teachers, parents, and grandparents enjoyed a lovely reception and playground celebration to mark this childhood milestone. We'll miss these sweet faces in the Averyt Center but know they will do great things in Kindergarten!💙💚
Please visit https://ow.ly/MjjL50S0Vrb for more pictures from EC4 Baccalaureate.
Congratulations to the Class of 2032! Baccalaureate services were held Tuesday in honor of this fabulous group of Highlanders. Following the service, the newly minted fifth graders were led to a reception by Middle School Head Glenn Delaney- where he led them in a cheer before enjoying time with their families. We have lots of great pictures to share- visit the SmugMug link in our bio for more from Fourth Grade Baccalaureate.
Only 2️⃣ days left until Commencement! We are so excited for our seniors. Swipe ➡️ to see today's senior spotlights!
Splash into summer! Heathwood's Early Childhood students celebrated the last week of school with bubbles, bounce houses, waterslides, and more! Water Day is always a big. hit with our youngest Highlanders and we can't get enough of those great smiles.💙💚
Heathwood Hall will celebrate Commencement 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 31 at Trinity Cathedral. The service will be live streamed. Please visit https://ow.ly/J50W50RYQC9
