AUGUST 6TH SECOND EVENT

The Columbia Friends Meeting held their 34th Hiroshima Vigil Remembrance at the All Good Books Store in Columbia SC on August 6th.
34 years ago, Harry Rogers started the Hiroshima Remembrance Vigil-this touches my heart. So, I was honored when the Hiroshima Remembrance Committee invited me to participate via zoom to talk about my mother and my family under the mushroom cloud that day.

Thank you to WLTX News19 Columbia,SC for also mentioning it on the air.

Very grateful to Ben Adams at ALL GOOD BOOKS,where the vigil was held, for having my books available as well as 3 other books I recommended that are related to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

There was standing room only to see the local singers and poets that performed that day as well. A very special thank you to Harry Rogers,Cassandra Fralix, Elaine Frick, Tayyaba Sidiq, Omme Rahemtullah, Al Black, Bethany Storlazzi, the Columbia Friends Meeting's and Hiroshima Remembrance Committee members. And thank you to all who attended this Vigil. Your compassion for my mother's and my story as well as your dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament have left me with a very full heart.❤️

*Mom, I love you and will make sure your voice is never silenced.💞🙏💞

Tell Gov. McMaster we want no hungry summers for kids in South Carolina! 06/11/2024

"Millions of children in the U.S. rely on school breakfasts and lunches for the nutrition they need. But when school is out, many kids don’t get enough food to be healthy and thrive.

To fill that gap, Congress created the SUN Bucks program (also known as Summer EBT). The new program will provide $120 in grocery-buying benefits to low-income families with school-age children. That could benefit as many as 30 million children.

While most states opted into the SUN Bucks program in 2024 and others plan to the following year, as of now 11 states have chosen not to implement the program by the summer of 2025." South Carolina is one of them!

Tell Gov. McMaster we want no hungry summers for kids in South Carolina! You can help people displaced by war, persecution, and other disasters. Join the Refugee Response Fund Matching Gift Challenge by June 30. Your gift will be matched up to $100,000!

This bill in the SC state legislature (H. 5118) would give our state utilities carte blanche to build a massive fossil gas power plant on the Edisto River, locking us into fossil fuel dependence for electricity generation for the foreseeable future. Here's a link to the actual legislation: https://www.scstatehouse.gov/sess125_2023-2024/bills/5118.htm.

H. 5118 is a huge bill and covers many issues. The one that is of greatest concern is Section 58-33-195, which "encourages" Dominion to construct up to 2000 megawatts (that's a lot) of gas-fired electrical generation capacity, and also encourages Duke Energy to construct additional gas-fired generators. If you'd like to read it yourself, follow the link to the proposed legislation above and scroll down until you get to this section.
There's a hearing next Tuesday, February 27, in the Blatt Building, Room 403, on the State Capitol campus. We've been asked to begin to gather at noon for the hearing that will start between 2:00 and 2:30 and it's important that the climate and environment community show up to register our opposition to this very bad bill.

SC Conservation Voters is hosting an informational webinar on the bill tomorrow (Friday, Feb 22) at noon. If you'd like to know more about the bill and efforts to oppose it, you can join their webinar by clicking this link. If that link doesn't work you can copy and paste the following into your web browser: https://us02web.zoom.us/w/83689955569?tk=lVSqUVrufYdoUFz56z4A0PYpoRAlmelQJ3Q3UzSRoho.DQYAAAATfE9g8RZXOE93eWZralRyNlVONzIydGpBVXh3AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA&uuid=WN_hU8oE8FOSIG-nki7auL2iA
Again, for an opportunity to testify, or just to be present to represent our concerns:
DAY: Tuesday, February 27
TIME: Doors open at noon and the hearing is scheduled for 2:30 pm
PLACE: Blatt Building, Room 403, on the State Capitol campus
