Looking for group tutoring sessions for the summer to prevent summer slide?
The American Education Research Journal found that the average student loses between 17 and 34% of last year's learning gains during the summer break. Academic skill loss also compounds each summer leading to poor performance in the classroom.
Ms Medlock Teaches will be partnering with local libraries to bring quality group tutoring and teaching to you!.

Microscope work is a favorite STEM activity for my students. We examined specimens from a variety of plant & animal life π¬π©πΎβπ¬
One of my favorite activities to do with my early childhood students : Letter building!
To create this activity you will need to cut out: small curved lines, big curved lines, short straight lines and big straight lines.
When administering this activity, it is important to encourage your students to use the correct vocabulary when describing the type of lines that are on a letter. I encourage students to trace the letter first with their finger then build it with the lines and then ultimately writing it on paper.
This activity is important for young students to begin recognizing the correct formation & direction when making letters.
I saw this cool cinnamon rolls in a mug recipe using only a banana and flour and knew I had to try it with my students π©πΎβπ«
This fun recipe took only 30 minutes and made for a nice tasty treat that all my students enjoyed π

Daily Affirmations π
How often do you read daily affirmations with your kids? It's time to make it a daily habit!
Benefits of practicing daily affirmations with your student:
ππΎRaise self-esteem
ππΎEnhance self-image
ππΎChange negative thought patterns (I can't) into positive thought patterns (I can!)
ππΎImprove academic performance
ππΎMinimize the impact of negative emotions and trauma
ππΎReduce stress and increase happiness
ππΎEncourage a positive mood and a gratitude mindset.
The student you hear in the video did not take to affirmations at first. In fact, she was shy and embarrassed to say these things to herself.
With gentle guidance & reassurance over time, she was able to see that these statements about herself were true. Soon her self-limiting blocks dissolved and transformed into open doors to freedom and happiness.
Interested in having this set of affirmations for your own family? Click the link below and download my curated poster of daily affirmations (free!)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_MLjvw2Ow13D4faYDwKxmRKRZ0RIcIIHhF6SaY_R-o0/mobilebasic
When practicing these daily affirmations, ensure to encourage your student to look at themselves in the mirror and repeat these statements to their reflection. Practice the affirmations with your student daily in order to build a routine.

So very proud of my student Chizaram for mastering his multiplication tables 0-12!!!!
When I was in 3rd grade, my teacher challenged our class to learn our multiplication tables. If we were to demonstrate mastery, we were to be rewarded with our own personal trophy engraved with our name commemorating our hard work. This was one of my very first academic challenges that encouraged me to learn discipline & focus. I received my trophy and remember feeling so full of pride. I never forgot about it since.
Now as a teacher, I've opened up that same opportunity to all my students.
Ive recently had the opportunity to award my very first multiplication trophy to one of my students. We have been working consistently over the last 5 months using a routine I've designed to foster a competitive spirit and strong memory retention. I am so proud of his hard work and feel so thankful to be able to come full circle like this βΊοΈπ€
Admiring the beautiful fall foliage has me reminiscing on these beautiful flower cookies I made with some of my students a few months ago π΅οΈπ₯°
Making these edible flower shortbread cookies was a cumulative activity after our lessons on the plant and animal life cycle & food chains π±
Me and my students love this awesome Google 3D feature! Using my phone I am able to project different animals and creatures and bring the zoo right into the room!

Been so busy with the front end of business, haven't had much time to work the back end. So please enjoy this beautiful reading & comprehension conversation from my prek student. He is definitely ready for kindergarten π.
After reading a passage, it's important to have comprehension questions to discuss the story. Challenge your student by asking questions that use critical thinking skills and dig deeper into the story. It's never too early to ask your student to find information in the story that answers a question, as this makes for a great researcher. .

Not him directing me lol π.
Anyways, in this short clip we practice writing equations forwards and backwards after filling in a number bond. It is important to practice this skill anytime writing an equation so students will feel comfortable seeing them written forwards and backwards in higher level maths.

After mastery of writing individual words, I encourage my pre-K student to write sentences.
This was our first time, so I made sure to scaffold the entire process by 1) providing lines to write the words on, 2) rehearsing the sentence to be written while pointing at the lines & 3) modeling feeling proud of our work after completion.
Soon comes stories and paragraphs π©πΎβπ«

Prek student reading a new story for the first time π€
Here I introduce a new story to my prek student to read aloud and he does an amazing job!!!!
When students make a mistake reading a new word, allow them to retry the word and then read the sentence again from the top. As you can see, although I corrected him on the word "gets", he still restated his version, this is fine and completely normal. I will be sure to add these words into our next vocabulary cycle π©πΎβπ«

Practice Spelling π§Ύ
Here me and my prek student practice finding phonemes and spelling words. After this activity, we will write the word and draw a picture matching the word.
This skillset is important for early childhood students to practice hearing and identifying phonemes and connecting a picture to the word.
