A new Mozart work discovered! Composed for string trio, the seven-movement piece is believed to have been written in the mid to late 1760s, when Mozart was a teenager.
‘Mozart dropped a new single’ – classical fans queue to hear newly discovered work in Leipzig Long lines of music lovers formed to hear a piece of history, as a previously unknown Mozart trio received its first public performance.
THE MORE YOU KNOW 🌈 Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet had a difficult path to production! The ballet was originally intended for the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, but the collaboration fell through before Prokofiev started writing. Prokofiev then offered the ballet to the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, but the dancers rejected it as too difficult to dance. The ballet was finally performed in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1938, and in the Soviet Union in 1940. Join us October 18th to hear selections from suite 1 & 2 performed by YOUR SC Phil!
The centerpiece of our JULIET & HER ROMEO program is Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major - performed by pianist Katherine Liu. With its refinement, understatement and irrepressible joy, the concerto is a fitting testament to Ravel’s unique genius. Sadly, this would be one of Ravel’s final completed works. He would fall silent after 1932, afflicted with a neurological disease that made it difficult for him to write, speak and coordinate his movements.
CONCERT UPDATE! Our world premiere commission from Chinese composer Shaosheng Li will be postponed for a later season so that we can bring Li's star-soprano to the US for the performance. No worries, though! We are still excited that we will be performing another work by Li: Centuries. This piece employs the tonalities characteristic of northern Chinese music, particularly drawing inspiration from the melodic contours of Shaanxi folk singing. 🎶

Finally, Regan Voit was given Board Emeritus Status after 19 years of service to the SC Phil. It takes a village, and ours is pretty special! ♥🎶

There is no question that Joe Pinner loved many things about his community, and one of his great passions was the South Carolina Philharmonic. Since his first days on-air at WIS TV, he talked about the SC Philharmonic (previously the Columbia Philharmonic) on-air. As Mr. Knozit he often queued then-conductor Dr. Jack Bauer to perform. Children watching from home believed there was an orchestra in the studio, but it was just Joe’s daily nod as to how grand it would be to have a studio orchestra! From the early days of the Philharmonic, Joe was the emcee for our children's concerts, and also narrated and emceed for us during many performances and events. He mentioned us on air every time he could find a reason, even in retirement.
In 2018 we created the Ambassador of the Year award, and Joe was our very first recipient. He was the best and most effective ambassador this orchestra ever had, supporting and loving this organization for the past 60 years. Here is a clip below of Joe building excitement with an audience full of second grade students. His love for our orchestra, and for the students, was contagious! We will miss you Joe.
What a great start to the 24|25 Chamber Crawl Series! SCP musicians Andrew Lynn (violin) and Ying Liao (cello) gave a great performance and the War Mouth provided their tried and true delicious food and drink with excellent service. ❤️
