The League of Women Voters is supporting the John Lewis Day of Commemoration and Action on July 17. LWVSC VP Lynn Teague will be among the speakers. We hope that everyone will join us at the South Carolina State House on July 17 at 4:30 PM to commemorate the past and mobilize for the future. The John Lewis Voting Rights Act is badly needed to restore confidence in access to the ballot.

Today the Supreme Court of the United States overturned a lower court’s ruling that South Carolina’s congressional map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.
The 6-3 decision in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP allows the state of South Carolina to continue using its congressional map that divides and reduces Black political voting power in the state while increasing the burden on voters who challenge unconstitutional racial gerrymanders in federal court.

The Legislature's lifting of the tax on period products is a big victory for SC's women and girls. The unrelenting efforts of WREN and the Period Project advocating for this bill paid off. This ruling deprives voters of another fair election. By defending this map, SC legislators prioritize power over people. The League is disappointed that South Carolinians will face another election without justice, but we will continue to seek fair maps.
