Hand Me Down Dobes

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rescuing Dobermans in need since 1994. Visit our website a We believe every Doberman deserves a forever home.

To accomplish this goal, our nonprofit rescue depends on support from people like you! Donations allow us to rescue Dobes left with no where to go, and provide the care they need. Our Dobes come from animal shelters, humane societies, and owner surrenders. After time in a caring foster home, we carefully place these dogs into approved adoptive homes. We also work to educate the public about the Doberman breed, the importance of spaying and neutering, training, and responsible, humane pet care.

Settling nicely into rescue, Jayko is a handsome 3 year old, cropped, red doberboy. He is an active and alert youngster appearing to have a strong working breed temperament. In the home Jayko has excellent manners and he wouldn’t dream of begging or trying to grab snack food during TV time. An avid fan of watching television, he will be right by your side enjoying football or any programming of your choice! That sizzling pan of bacon left on the stove, however, can be overly tempting and he will need to be reminded that although he wants to be hands-on in the kitchen, sampling food is not allowed. He seems to have been trained to not enter the bathroom with you and will politely wait outside the door keeping all possible intruders out. This velcro leaner is calm and quiet with you in the home, craving affection and attention while wanting to please. He is crate trained and quiet in the crate.

Like many working dogs, when the energy level of the home increases, Jayco becomes easily excited and is ready to go. He loves to ride in the car but can get amped up when seeing passersby with dogs and will bark. Jayko seems to think he is protecting his car and his people! He has high prey drive and will bark and chase birds and squirrels if given the opportunity. He can get overly wound-up with doggy playdates and will do best as an only dog. No cats or pocket pets, please. Jayko is an amazing dog with so much potential. He will thrive in a highly structured, adults-only home that provides him with ample opportunities to use his intelligence as well as his need to burn energy within a safely fenced yard. He enjoys walks and has done well wearing a front-clip harness. Friendly with most people he meets, he can be unsure when approached by some large, tall men. Calm reassurance along with treats has helped him gain confidence in these situations.

Interested in Jayko? Visit HMDD.org to fill out your application today. If you are already approved with us, email us at [email protected].

Kona is a handsome 4-year-old red doberboy with bright eyes and perky, natural ears. The best way to describe this wonderful boy is that he unfortunately lacked consistent socialization and guidance through his adolescent years. He is smart and proving to be a quick learner, eager to understand his place in different environments and around other dogs. Kona is crate trained but needs encouragement to go into the crate. He has excellent manners in the home and has been left out while his foster dad runs errands with no problems. He simply lays on the couch and watches out the window waiting for his return. Kona is friendly with people and a sweet cuddlebug during evening TV time. He enjoys the other dogs at his foster home but had to learn that he was not the boss of this pack and that humans are not exclusively his. Again, he learned this very quickly and has become the bulldog matriarch’s endearing sidekick, spending time daily by her side keeping an eye on the backyard and watching birds overhead. He has prey drive and will diligently keep your yard free from any critters trying to move in. He walks nicely wearing a harness but he needs continued work on manners when out and about. Kona enjoys doggy daycare but needed slow introductions at first. That keen mind of his soon figured out this was a fun place to romp and play and now he has a great time with the other dogs. Kona rides nicely in the car and loves to go.

Kona wants to please and simply needs clear, firm, consistent boundaries as he matures. He is not a starter dog and will do best in a home without children or cats.

Interested in Kona? Visit HMDD.org to fill out your application today. If you are already approved with us, email us at [email protected].

Faryn is an adorable natural eared, black and rust, 4 month-old puppy. Unlike most Diva Dobermans, she will happily play, hop and dance in the rain. She is friendly with everyone she meets. She has done fine with other dogs and older children, so she should smoothly fit into an active home. Faryn is crate trained, but like any young pup, she is too young to be left in the crate for long periods of time.

As with all of our puppies, she will need a fenced yard so she can safely romp and play to get those puppy zoomies out! If you are an experienced Doberman owner who will provide calm, firm, consistent guidance as she matures, then Faryn is your girl!

As we approach our 30th anniversary, we continue our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and place Dobes into loving, forever homes. These are just a few of the faces of the dogs we have been able to save this year with the help of our volunteers and donors. We bring in dogs of all ages and even dogs with injuries or known health issues. This comes at a cost and we rely not only on our volunteers who GIVE generously of their time but on our generous donors who GIVE to our organization, allowing us to continue our mission.

We take the health of our rescued dogs seriously and they receive immediate and thorough veterinary care which includes a wellness exam, vaccinations, and heartworm/fecal tests. The dog is treated for any medical issues, spayed or neutered, microchipped and placed on preventatives for heartworms as well as fleas and ticks. Some dogs have more serious health issues where they require surgery, extra testing or care from a veterinary specialist.

So far this year, we have brought in 40 Dobes and we are seeing a big increase in the number of dogs waiting to come into our program. Our expenses for veterinary care and medicine have been over $35,000, as of October. That does not include the cost of food, supplements or other supplies for our dogs. Our adoption fees only cover a portion of the cost to save these Dobes. We are an all volunteer organization so every dollar you donate either goes directly to the care of the dogs or to our efforts to get them into their forever home.

PLEASE consider GIVING to HMDD and help us continue saving Dobes.

We have multiple ways you can donate. Visit HMDD.org and click on the Donate button or you can send your check to:

Thanksgiving, such a special day as we gather together with loved ones from far and near while remembering those no longer with us. A day of coming together, belonging, and tradition wrapped up in the warmth of love and gratitude.
With your faith and trust in us, for thirty years we have been able to rescue thousands of Ohio Dobermans. Bringing dogs into rescue is just the beginning as our sweet, sensitive and often misunderstood breed must be placed into safe, loving foster homes, given thorough veterinary care as well as behavioral support if needed, and then matched with the right home for that particular dog. We acknowledge that the breed traits of a Doberman are not for everyone, and we have always carefully matched our dogs with wonderful owners in safe, loving forever homes no matter how long that takes. Please visit our website and look at those still waiting. Perhaps you have a place in your home and your heart to adopt. If not, we appreciate any type of support .
We have much to be grateful for as a nonprofit, charitable rescue that has been actively saving dogs for thirty years. Thank you to each and every volunteer, foster home, adopter and donor that has supported our worthy cause. Because of you Dobermans have been given that second chance to love and be loved.
Again, thank you to all and Happy Thanksgiving.

Talley is a sweet, petite, cropped 18-month-old black and rust dobergirl. Not just a pretty face, she is at that wonderful age where she is through the young puppy stage and ready to learn! She has plenty of puppy energy but with engaging activities and plenty of exercise she settles nicely and is a snuggly, cuddly girl. Eager to learn, she is like a little sponge and will quickly be at the top of her obedience class! Her foster mom says a social butterfly is a good description of her as she is friendly with everyone she meets including other dogs. She enjoyed the trick or treat excitement and didn’t bat an eye or raise a lip at costumes! She rides quietly in the car and loves to go. She has good manners in the home but like any youngster will need consistent monitoring as she matures. She is crate trained but does need encouragement to go in. She loves her chew bones but believes all stuffies need to be destroyed! She gets along nicely with the tolerant male Dobe in her foster home. A tad bossy, she can be a talker and seems to be a typical dobergirl with a lot to say!

She does have a diva side and will want a nice selection of sweaters and coats in her new home. She loves her hot pink harness which she wears proudly on neighborhood walks. Talley is not a starter dog or a good fit for young families. She is looking for a loving home that will provide consistent boundaries and ample opportunities for learning as she matures. In return, Talley will reward new owners with her devotion, love and loyalty!

Interested in Talley? Visit HMDD.org to fill out your application today. If you are already approved with us, email us at [email protected].

Vader is an adorable natural eared, black and rust, 7-month-old puppy who is ready for his forever home! At 57 pounds he is already a big pup and growing quickly, so he will mature into a large Doberman.

Friendly with everyone he meets, he should smoothly fit into almost any active home. His foster dad reports that he has a calm, laid back temperament and is not a high energy pup. Vader has good manners in the home but like any pup, will need supervision as he matures. He is crate trained and has done fine in the crate for a few hours during the day. He sleeps all night on his dog bed in the master bedroom. He gets along nicely with other dogs and may be cat safe.

Like all of our puppies we are asking for a fenced yard so that he can safely romp and play! Vader likes to ride in the car but he does get queasy which can be common in some pups.

Interested in Vader? Visit HMDD.org to fill out your application today. If you are already approved with us, email us at [email protected].

π‘πšπ’ππžπ«

Words that best describe this natural eared, black and rust, 14-month-old youngster include sweet, cuddly, curious, and ready to learn! He appears to be a well-socialized youngster and is friendly with everyone he meets. He is playful with other dogs and is cat friendly in his foster home. He has typical puppy energy and is not a good candidate for inactive owners. Raider has fairly good manners in the home but a plate of bacon left unattended will magically disappear. He is highly food motivated and will be an enthusiastic student in training classes. True to the breed, he wants to please and praise also makes him beam with pride and joy! Raider is a big boy with big paws which he often uses to let you know he needs your attention. He craves to be with you and after mental stimulation and exercise he is a snuggly cuddlebug. A real lover, his foster mom thinks the name Romeo is a better fit for this sweet, sensitive hunk! Like most young dogs he will need a consistent potty schedule until he can convey his need to go outside. He is a private kind of guy and does not like to potty on leash. Raider is looking for a home that is ready for a big boy with a puppy brain! He should be fine with older children but his size may be too much for a home with toddlers. He is ready for calm, consistent owners that will continue his socialization and positive training to help him mature into a well-rounded Doberman.

Interested in Raider? Visit HMDD.org to fill out your application today. If you are already approved with us, email us at [email protected].

Fostering a Dog for Hand Me Down Dobes

We are faced with the reality of having to turn away Dobermans and we desperately need your help. There are dogs we cannot help because we simply do not have enough foster homes. Before you think that fostering isn't for you, PLEASE take a moment to consider fostering and email us if you have any questions.

Fostering is a rewarding experience and a chance to make a difference to one of these wonderful Dobes like Phoebe and the people who adopt them.

Rayden is ready to find the loving, forever home she so deserves! This gentle 8-year-old, red, cropped dobergirl did not have an easy life before coming into rescue. Her life revolved around having litter after litter of puppies until she could no longer produce and was deemed worthless. She was discarded and dumped, ending up as a frightened, traumatized stray. Rayden was on the run for a while until animal control was able to catch her. She has blossomed in foster care, filling out nicely and looking so much better than the emaciated girl from a few months ago. Her coat is now a deep, mahogany red that is soft and thick, and she looks healthy! Her foster dad reports that her daily routine includes galloping out the backdoor and then leaping like a gazelle off the patio into the yard seeming to announce to the world The Queen has arrived! She has definitely become the queen of her foster home and she will share her new castle with other pets assuming they allow her to remain the queen. She patrols the fence line daily and chases intruders such as birds and squirrels with determination! She believes the neighborhood is also under her command and she will let other dogs that are out on walks know they need to move along!

Rayden is starting to understand toys. She has found that the backyard with all its glorious grass is the perfect place to roll around and sunbathe. She is crate trained and does best sleeping in her crate at night. She is highly food motivated and is a quick learner, already mastering sit and shake. She gets so excited when it is training time! Rayden is looking for a calm, quieter home with no young children. New owners will need to understand that she is a work in progress as she continues to learn what unconditional love and living in a home means. She will reward you as a loyal and devoted companion, gently laying her head on your lap and gazing up with soft, trusting eyes as if to say "thank you for bringing me home".

Interested in Rayden? Visit HMDD.org to fill out your application today. If you are already approved with us, email us at [email protected].
