“There are only 7% women in orthopedic surgery across the United States, but the percentages of trainees are improving. We still have a long way to go to achieve a field that is representative of the patient population we serve. Nonetheless, orthopedic surgery is one of most rewarding careers and I cannot imagine doing any other specialty. For anyone considering this path, I say go for it!” - Julie Samora, MD, Surgeon, Orthopedics

Meet Katelyn. Earlier this year, she wrote a passionate letter to the Butterfly Paws team and recorded it to share why she thought it was so important to have therapy and facility dogs on the 11th and 12th floors of the hospital, a place where she stays frequently.

Thanks to her letter and support from our community, we've been able to expand our program and now Katelyn gets to visit with her favorite pups during her hospital stays!

She writes, "Thank you for all you do for Butterfly Paws. Having dogs on the 11th and 12th floor has made so many kids happy, including me! The dogs are so sweet and cute! Having a furry friend in the hospital has really made my stays a lot better! Sometimes I am really tired and when the dog comes I feel encouraged to get out of bed and snuggle! Even when I can't get out of bed, I love how the dog jumps right up and snuggles with me! The dogs have made me so happy during my stays in the hospital."

👋 Meet our sweet friend, Eliza.

Due to congenital airway and lung abnormalities, Eliza had a tracheostomy tube placed when she was just 4 months old. Now a thriving 7 year old, she is trach tube free and breathing independently!

Eliza's mom has shared her most recent celebratory milestone with us 🔽

"Just thought you might appreciate the milestone we are so excited to celebrate! Today is what we have decided to call Eliza’s Trach Symmetry Day, meaning she has officially been trach free for as long as she had the trach: 1,141 days. 😍

Thank you! Thank you for encouraging us to get the trach, for answering all of my questions 6 years ago, and every question since then! For listening to me and Eliza. You are, and have been, an incredible advocate for her and her care and such a huge part of her story and a vital part of her team!

She really is thriving! We just had her Make-A-Wish trip, she did great on the flights and had an incredible time is Disneyland in California. She’s speaking more, eating more, and is learning to read! Things I never could have imagined when we agreed to the trach and that I don’t think would have been possible without it.

Thank you!! I mean every kind word. I am beyond grateful to you and others on her team that have supported her and made the 'inchstones' and milestones I get to celebrate possible!"

Congratulations, Eliza! ❤️
