Thank you to everyone who showed up for our DeafBlind Zoo Fun Day at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium!

In case you missed it, here are some of the many highlights from the event:

— We met 34 DeafBlind individuals, with some people traveling from Akron, Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, Kentucky, and even New York!

— We had 74 American Sign Language (ASL) volunteers, including donations of professional interpreting services from Heritage Interpreting and Access 2 Interpreters, LLC.

— We did over 100 DeafBlind and Blind simulation activities, increasing public awareness of these lived experiences.

— We collaborated with many different organizations on activity stations, including Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths and Adults, Ohio En-Compass, Deaf Services Center, and Good Sign Coffee Co.

— NBC 4, ABC 6, and News 10 were there to film. Here is a video of the Channel 4 interview with one of our DeafBlind clients, Shirley Rybarski, and one of our very own SSP employees, Danny Lucero: https://buff.ly/3KET2NB!

Our DeafBlind Zoo event was a day of fun and awareness for the community. Thank you again to our partners, volunteers, and attendees for making this event so amazing!

With spring in full swing, we are excited to share our new sign of the month - “spring”! Fun fact: this sign originates from the sign “grow", but not to get them confused as “grow” uses a single motion and “spring” uses a double motion.

Today’s therapy share is from Leslie Terrell, CSH assistant director of speech services. 🦈🪸🌊

One way to engage children in speech therapy activities is through sensory exercises. Children love hands-on activities, and this one also introduces several vocabulary words as well.

Using a bin filled with water and ocean animals, our little ones can practice saying words like
- Open/close
- In/out
- Stir/shake/swim/splash

This activity also allows children to make autonomous choices when deciding which animal to put in the water and practice exclamatory words like ‘wow’ and ‘whoa’ or description words like wet, cold, colors and sizes.

⏰📆Imagine our calendar as a big clock ticking away the days. Most years, it goes tick-tock, one day at a time. However, every four years, we add a special day, which is called Leap Day. It's like a bonus day that helps us keep everything in sync.

Here's the cool part: Earth takes about 365 and a quarter days to orbit the sun. So, every four years, we gather those extra quarters and add a whole extra day to our calendar. That's what we call a "leap year."

On Leap Day, it's like time takes a little leap forward to keep our calendars in tune with how Earth dances around the sun.☀️🌎

February 24th is Cochlear Implant Day! Cochlear implants are electronic devices that provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. The device has two parts - one is located behind the ear, and the other is implanted under the skin through a surgical procedure.

We have a great story to share. Thanks to the care and expertise of his CSH audiologist, one of our clients discovered a whole new world of sound on his own terms. It's moments like these that make us proud of what we do! 🌟👂
